Welcome to Green and Gold Rugby’s preview of round five of the Queensland GPS First XV Rugby season. We’re officially at the halfway point this, and Nudgee and Southport are right back on top of the competition – it is firmly theirs to lose. As much as things change, they always stay the same. Sniffing at their heels are Churchie, who sit alone on one win. In a crowded middle tier BBC, TGS, GT and BSHS have all dropped two games early in the season, effectively ruling them out of contention. Bringing up the rear are the State’s two oldest schools…

The season opener of 2014 pitted BBC against TSS, Terrace against BGS, Brisbane State High against Toowoomba, and Churchie against Ipswich. This year’s return fixtures were the perfect rematch that we’d all been hoping for, especially after last year’s average margin of victory crept to a disappointingly high 24.5-points per game. That tune was changed this weekend as sides played out the closest round of fixtures since Green & Gold Rugby began covering GPS Rugby in 2012. With a competition-wide victory margin of five-points, three from four matches finished up one possession games. Toowoomba Grammar exacted sweet revenge for last year’s heartbreaking 29-34 loss…

With such a short competition, it is imperative for the stars of tomorrow to achieve absolute perfection for each of their eight matches in 2015. After all, no team has won the GPS by dropping two games for a very long time. With perennial contenders Nudgee and Southport looking as strong as ever, the rest of the competition have a hard task ahead of them to take down the twin giants of GPS Rugby. Defending-champions Churchie must…

TSS will be looking to improve from the previous week. A clinical edge from last year was missing. That…
GPS Rugby kicks off in Brisbane this weekend. Our old mate from the forum, warrenwobble, casts his unique yet scarily accurate eye over things as part of his Brisbane GPS Rugby Preview for Round 1. The Southport School (TSS) v Brisbane Grammar School (BGS) The light blue dark blue will make the trip down the M1 with high hopes of staying within 30 points of TSS. It’s a fair enough aim given the absolute pastings they endured last year. The beach boys will have other ideas, as they usually start quicker than a Bali tourist heading to the airport before an ash…
