And was the imperfect rugby upbringing of the Aussies part of the problem?
That England system mentioned earlier — we have it in Australia now, but it is the AFL and NRL youngsters who are trained that way, not the rugby boys. New Zealand, through its several rugby unions, operates something similar and sweeps elite 13- and 14-year-olds into their system. Ditto in South Africa.
Australia is doing it back to front: on a national basis, because we don’t have a dozen domestic professional teams or the same number of regional unions they have in the RSA or NZ, to do it locally. They’re doing it on the cheap too, with their Gold Squads and National Academy.
And the Under 20 coaches? Cheap. Nucifora, Eddy and Scrivener are already employed by the ARU in the High Performance Unit.
Was it the cattle, the coaches or our national set-up? A bit of each, methinks.
