In the final round of Tasmanian rugby before the competition bye, Devonport have moved into top spot whilst Glenorchy have swapped positions with Quins to go second. At Rugby Park, Glenorchy Stags moved to second place on the ladder by defeating Harlequins, 33-18. A see-sawing first half saw the Quins take a one point lead into the break but the Stags produced a comprehensive second period performance to run away with the victory. Round 8 of the Tasmanian Rugby Competition has seen the top four begin to take shape with the top sides all recording victories. At Rugby Park, Devonport Bulls defeated Taroona Penguins 24-22 to maintain second spot on the table. In a tight match the Bulls led for most of the day but were pressed hard by a tough Penguins side. Whilst Taroona were strong in the set piece the creativity of the Devonport inside backs provided enough opportunities for the visitors, both sides scoring three tries with the boot of Connor Mack proving crucial. Glenorchy and Taroona have strengthened their claims for spots in the top four, both recording comprehensive victories in Round Six of the Tasmanian Rugby Competition. Glenorchy Stags have defeated Eastern Suburbs Roosters 43-8 at Eady Street to press their claim for a top two position. The visitors came out strongly, scoring an early try out wide to give them the lead but Glenorchy came back into the match through solid defence in the tight channels. Round 5 of the Tasmanian Rugby Competition has seen the unbeaten Harlequins pushed hard at University whilst Eastern Suburbs suffered their first loss of the year. In an exciting and brutal match at University, Harlequins defeated the Students 25-16, Sidney Fielea scoring the winning try with five minutes to play. A tight first period saw the Quins take a one point lead into the interval following a try by Michael Fox in the final play of the half. Round 4 of the Tasmanian Rugby Competition has seen Eastern Suburbs record a historic win whilst Harlequins also continued to be unbeaten in 2014. Roosters Rule the Roost For the first time in over a decade, Eastern Suburbs Roosters have defeated Taroona Penguins, 28-20 at Warrane. In a game of two halves, the Penguins established a solid lead heading into the interval, scoring two tries on the back of a solid attacking structure, masterfully executed by flyhalf, Christo Le Grange. In Round 3 of the Tasmanian Rugby Competition Hobart Harlequins have defeated Devonport Bulls on the road whilst Launceston caused the upset of the week with their defeat of Taroona. At the Don Rec Ground, Quins spoilt the hosts’ fiftieth anniversary celebrations with a dramatic 31-30 victory, both sides scoring five tries. The Bulls dominated the early exchanges, taking a 15 point lead with flanker Brett Bentley scoring twice, but the defending premiers fought back to close the gap with an 18-12 halftime score.
