2. Grassroots kick-off
It’s great to see grassroots footy kicking off again for another year. The Brisbane Premier comp has been up and running for a few weeks now, and Sydney’s Shute Shield made a start last week. This week it is the first round of Subbies Rugby in Sydney, and I wish everyone all the best for the season. I also encourage everyone to support their local side, whether it be at club or suburban level. With the 3rd tier comp around the corner the grassroots of the game are more important than ever, and ultimately it is people at the ground who keep it going.
There is also plenty more riding on the local comps this season, with the coaches of the new teams (TBA) undoubtedly keen to uncover the next batch of rugby stars. As a case in point, the blokes who stood out in the ARC back in 2007 were Ben Mowen, Ben Alexander and Kurtley Beale. Now obviously they were already somewhat known, but I don’t think it is a coincidence that they are still dominant seven years later.
I can’t wait to see the next batch of players get a crack, and hope that we can see future Super squads with plenty of depth and talent.
