Scots 54 — Kings 22
This game went to plan — the Scots’ plan
The scoring
Most people felt that Scots would win this match, they just couldn’t agree by how much.
From the kick off it was obvious that Scots would be up to the task with a penalty on their 40m seeing (10) Styles break through the line passing to (4) Rudolph who scored under the posts after four minutes for the first of (15) Kellaway’s seven easy conversions for the day.
Shortly after, Kings were awarded a penalty which was successfully kicked by (10) Charlie Friend making the score 7 – 3 after six minutes.
Further penalties to Kings for Scots players not rolling away from the tackled player had (13) James Kane use his prodigious boot to get Kings down to the Scots 22. A clever steal by (10) Styles at a following ruck saw the ball go to (15) Kellaway for an assumed clearing kick, however he spread the ball wide to (12) Starkey.
Kellaway then wrapped around Starkey and gave the ball to (13) Porter who made 70 metresup the sideline before an inside pass found Starkey backing up and scoring under the posts for a converted try. 14 – 3 Scots.
Shortly after the Scots backs were again in action with inside balls seeing (8) Kamp stroll over for the first of his two tries. 21 – 3 Scots
A number of incursions by the Kings team during the next period were well met by Scots however they gave away penalties in their defensive efforts. Kings were eventually penalised for collapsing a maul and Kellaway’s clearing kick did not find touch. A further penalty kick by Scots brought a lineout on the Kings ten metre line. Phase play with the forwards sees (1) Isileli Fa barge his way over under the posts for a converted try. 28 – 3 Scots after 33 minutes.
Following the restart the Kings scrum was penalised for pushing off the mark and a quick tap saw the ball across the backs. Poor handling by the Scots backs had the ball on the ground which Kings centre (13) James Kane scooped up and evaded the defence to score his first try which was converted by Friend. 28 – 10 to Scots at half time.
Second Half
Kick off penalty to Kings with the clearing kick by Kane not successful. Kellaway brought the ball back passing to Crossley to Short to Styles and back to Short to score under the posts. 35 – 10 Scots.
After eight minutes Kings were pressing the Scots line with some promise only to see an intercept try by Starkey who ran 90m to score under the posts. 42 – 10 Scots.
Kings worked their way back up field through a penalty and six+ phases to receive a further penalty within 10m. Kings loose ball sees Starkey race up field within 30m of the Kings line. Further play saw the backs give an inside ball to Kamp to score his second try under the posts. 49 – 10 Scots
Kings hit back with another try to Kane who beat a staggered defence to score with Friend converting. 49 – 17 Scots.
From the restart Scots gathered possession and put it through the hands to (14) Yassmin to score Scots final try. 54 – 17 Scots.
With the game winding down, Kings scored through replacement forward Mark Quadrio who gathered the ball from a Scots lineout to score a late consolation try. Scots won 54 – 22.
The teams
Kings tried hard throughout the game however were met at each encounter by a well drilled Scots team. They had passages of good play however handling and penalties let them down.
Scots defence was very good up to the last 15 minutes. The attacking prowess of this team from all parts of the field makes it very difficult for opposition teams as they don’t usually give them much rest.
The Players
Kings — (10) Friend and (7) McCalman had good games whist (13) Kane was very good in a losing team.
Scots — (12) Starkey was excellent today and (10) Styles set up a number of tries with good linking and passing. In the forwards (8) Olly Kamp was tireless and deserving of his two tries.
Wrap Up
Scots maintain their lead with a convincing win against a Kings team that never gave up. It would have been easy to have the score out by another five tries if the Kings team had hung their heads.
Scots powered down in the last 15 minutes with a late try to Kings to add to the scoreboard.
In the end Scots were too good across the field in the first 60 minutes.
