ISA 43 – CAS 10
by “Anonymous Al”
First half
The CAS main team was completely outplayed by ISA Ones in the third match of the day but they were the first to score after big winger Alex Diamond set up a try for his other wing David Stenning to dot the ball down after a few minutes of play.
Unfortunately this was when one of the best players for ISA, 12 Luke Lough, was injured and had to retire.
ISA weren’t behind for long though and first 8 Mila Hingano scored after good phase play followed by Australian Schools scrummie Harrison Goddard wrong-footing defenders with a snipe from a ruck.
ISA had the lead 12-5 after 15 minutes and never lost it.
CAS backs were telling each other “No dummies from 9”, but Goddard did not need deception for his next try—he backed-up from a scrum move in his own half and eluded defenders with his outside-back speed and finishing ability. He scored and converted his try for ISA to lead 19-5, ten minutes before oranges.
CAS had enough chances during the half to score more points but they turned over too much ball.
Half-time score: ISA 19 – CAS 5
Second half
ISA showed the class of their backrow when 6 James Donato made a good break and after Goddard gave a short pass to 7 Lachlan Anderson he burst through some weak tackles to score next to the posts. 26-5
Then 12 Joe Williams scored for CAS following good interplay with Stenning after the ball went from one side of the field to the other. For once CAS ball through the hands worked a treat for them, but that was their last score of the day.
The tally was 26-10 to ISA and they scored three more tries including one to lock Zac von Appen which left CAS defenders spread-eagled on the park.
Final score ISA 43-10.
The players
The ISA backrow of 6 Donato, 7 Anderson, and 8 Hingano was a well-balanced unit and the skill and feoricity of the individuals was not matched by CAS. Donato was one of the best loose forwards of the day.
Harrison Goddard could play any position in the backline, and as a scrumhalf he will be the benchmark for all Aussie schoolboy no. 9s this year.

How it worked
In the opinion of the selectors the NSW 1st XV is the best team from all the players available in the state. The 2nd XV is the best team available after the 1st XV players are chosen.
Thus the two best players in each position have the opportunity to start on a regular basis in front of the Australian Schools selectors, instead of some of them sitting on the bench of the Firsts.
After the selectors picked the two XVs they chose the best reserves for the 2nd XV on merit, then the reserves for 1st XV.
