Euros 20 defeat Warigals 14
In what has to be the first grand final of the year in Australia my old rugby club has notched up another grand final. Why is it the first final of the year I hear you ask? Well for some reason totally beyond me the Mount Isa District Rugby Union plays a summer comp and not in winter like most sane people do. They’re not completely crazy though. All games are evening or night games, but add in the 120 klm drive to Cloncurry every two or three weeks you start to get a picture of some pretty special rugby people.
I played over one hundred games for Euros but that pales in to insignificance next to a few other people. Ray Clarke founded the club in the early 70’s and had over 400 games logged when I left. Mick O’Connor is about the same vintage as me but played on and on and on after I had long gone. I’d love to know how many games he’s clocked up but he probably never counted them.
Euros greatest claim to fame was as the home of a young under 19 Australian second rower Rick Becker but now I’d say they’d be happy to be known as the club Ted Vinson played at before moving to Charters Towers to form a rugby club there and eventually become Australian coach of the year.
Anyway the important thing here is the rock Wallabies beat the Dingos (again) and all is right with my rugby world.
