Rumours are floating around about Channel 10’s interest in Super Rugby. It’s pretty exciting stuff. But there would have to be a lot of hurdles to overcome. Channel 10 would be most interested in Friday and Saturday night matches and Foxtel may not be interested in sharing what they rightfully consider the cream of their rugby coverage. They get 70 to 100 thousand people watching in those time slots and many fans, myself included, only have Foxtel for the rugby
Shute shield matches broadcast on the ABC can get 35 thousand viewers so the potential for Super Rugby is enormous.
Channel 10 already broadcast Rugby Test matches and moving into Super Rugby seems like a natural progression. They are struggling for market share at the moment and could see Rugby as a means to drive ratings.
