The 3rdTier – Weekly Wrap and Preview

As I discussed last week, we need to take the responsibility of building the third tier of rugby in Australia. If we come, they will build it.

On Saturday as I was getting my umbrella and jacket ready to head out to Easts to follow my own advice, I got the idea to start a hash tag on twitter. So I tweeted with the tag #3rdtier. It got a bit of traction, thanks to those who jumped on board, but it’s not enough. We need to get that tag trending every Saturday, they take notice of Social media, so get it noticed. Go down to a club game, buy a sausage sanga and a drink, enjoy some great rugby and tweet about it with the #3rdtier hash tag. You can also mention @the3rdtier or post on the 3rdTier’s facebook page.

Also, I will trawl the threads for each competition when putting this post together for match reviews, so if you are at a game, jot a couple of lines down, post them in relevant thread, or on facebook and I will include it the next week.

Remember, If we come, they will build it.

Easts 17 def by Brothers 20
Report from Spectator in the fourm

The result didn’t go the way I wanted but in horrible conditions, it was a pretty entertaining season opener down at Bottomley Park. The main game was preceded by the official opening of the new “David Wilson Field”, in honour of Easts most decorated player. Wilson (what a great player he was) was there and the whole thing was a nice touch.
As to the game, Easts sprinted out of the blocks and established an early lead and looked as though they might blow Brothers away.Easts had most of the ball in the first 20 minutes and through some pretty slick work from Johnny Wilder, posted the first try through new winger Kieran Ross. To Brothers credit they hung in there and after some nice individual work from the right winger Dylan ‘two dads” for a try and a another try from some good lead up work by one of the Murphy’s, Brothers had a slim lead going into halftime.
Easts came out firing after the break but good defence from Brothers kept them at bay. Brothers had the rub of the second half and scored the match winning try which might have come from a knock on. Easts had the chance to draw the game in the final minute with a penalty awarded from neary in front but went for the win instead of the kick and didn’t quite pull it off.
Final score, 20 – 17 to the Filth, and well deserved.

Rugby Gold Coast 29 d Sunshine Coast 15
GPS 28 d Norths 17
Report from emuarse in the forum

Watched the GPS/Norths game which GPS won 28/17 (4 tries bonus point), although for a large part of the game Norths were only 4 points behind and accounted for themselves very well. Norths will pull a few surprises this season.
Their halfback was into everytihing, while the GPS halfback was very sterio in only passing out & was caught or often had his ball stolen. Samo had a good game at stages, scoring the first try from the 50 metre line. With his hair style he was by far & away the biggest player onthe field. Without him GPS might have struggled for that win. The other stand out players for GPS were their wingers, Todd Winkley who bagged two tries, the last 5 minutes from full time when he ran half the field through what seemed almost the entire Norths team having their only lapse of the afternoon, & Byron Roberts, showing plenty of commitment & good speed, running through plenty of tackles.
An impartial Kiwi mate with me was very surprised at the high quality of the passing & standard of the game considering the wet conditions.

Souths 25 d Sunnybank 20
Wests 19 def by University of Queensland 23 (Played at Ballymore)
Report from Juan Cote in the forum

Heavies too powerful for the Dogs tonight. Dogs up at halftime 14-10 but couldn’t go on with it. Dogs scrum pretty good (2 tightheads but gave up one) however lineout poor.
Uni looked good in patches but I think were a bit surprised by how competitive/physical Wests were.
Pissed rain in the second half which didn’t help things but both teams battled on. Wests scored late to get close but Uni deserved the win.
