2. Gregory Terrace – 121.342
If pundits were surprised to see BBC and Churchie ranked 3 and 4 on the ladder and the Power Rankings, I can only imagine their shock at Gregory Terrace’s inclusion at the near top of the ladder. After finishing Wooden Spooners in 2012 in Terrace’s “worst ever First XV performance in 138 years of competitive rugby”, no-one could have imagined big things from the Spring Hill boys. A round 1 thumping by Southport made it seem like 2013 would be just like the 2012 season, but Terrace have well and truly turned it around with 3 straight wins, including a win against BBC for the second year in a row.
GT’s high Power Ranking can be attributed to the simple fact that they’ve won 3 in a row. One of the competitions lowest SOS ratings of 0.431 brings the ranking back to reality, and the win margin of 6.25 encapsulates the closeness of Terrace’s win streak.
But, the Power Ranking is an indicator of form, and no-one can deny that Terrace is in good form in the last 3 matches.
As such, I’m labelling Terrace the San Antonio Spurs GPS equivalent. This goes beyond the second place result the Kings landed in April though; a team with no big names besides Tony Parker went far deeper into the playoffs than anyone could have expected, knocking off plenty of better teams then themselves on the way to the Grand Final(s). If Terrace can keep outdoing themselves on the paddock there’s no reason they can’t keep up this high Power Ranking.
I’m just saying I don’t believe they can. Not just yet at least.
