Round 8 Preview!
8 games have passed since the tipping results were last reviewed, and the biggest improvement among the writers was indeed from myself, jumping out of dead last to joint second, and boy am I feeling good about my chances. Watch this space as I mount my final assault on the writers tipping table.
From the crowd, ‘Mungindigrasshoppers’ notched 8/8 over Round 6 and 7, scoring his 6th perfect round from 7 opportunities last week, tipping at an impressive 92%. Linespeed and Rugbygecko lurk not far behind, at 25/28 and 24/28 respectively.
Our Green and Gold Rugby tipping leaderboard currently sits:
1. RuggasXV (23/28, 82%)
2. TheKing (21/28, 75%)
= Spikhaza (21/28, 75%)
Game of the Round: Toowoomba Grammar at The Southport School
TheKing: This is Toowoomba’s turn to stand up and be counted with the heavyweights of the GPS competition. On the table TGS are ranked 7th. On the field, I’d rank Toowoomba 4th, with the potential to beat any team on their day.
Toowoomba are championed by a forward pack that loves smashing so-and-so’s almost as much as dismantling opposition set pieces. With some gutsy bloody wins in the last few weeks, including a record breaking O’Callaghan Cup win against Downlands, Toowoomba are in good form With injuries to some key players in the Southport XV I wouldn’t put it past Toowoomba to do the unthinkable here, and sneak a tight win the furthest away from home they can play in this competition.
I know their Piggies can stand up to TSS’ pack, but if the Toowoomba outside backs can mark their opposite man effectively TSS aren’t scoring any points here. Toowoomba for me.
Spikhaza: Incoming
RuggasXV: Can’t see Southport losing this one, expect them to also make the most of their last home game as well. TSS by 17.
Brisbane Grammar at Churchie
TheKing: As a BGS Old Boy coaching younger teams at the school, I still have plenty to do with the students, and the general consensus from the Spring Hill campus is: “If the First XV can keep 15 players on the field for the whole game, they should be able to stop Churchie from putting 80 on them. Anything less than 80 is okay”
I repeat: a 79 point defeat will be seen as a moral victory here. Therefore, I’m picking Churchie by 78. Time to celebrate, Grammar fans!
Spikhaza: Incoming
RuggasXV: The last home game for the BOC and they’ll want to celebrate it by ripping the spooners to shreds. ACGS by 39.
Gregory Terrace at Brisbane State High
TheKing: If you told me Gregory Terrace would be the 8th placed team in the comp by Round 8, I would have laughed. On the back of 5 consecutive losses Terrace haven’t earned a competition point since July.
Come on, man! It’s halfway through September, Terrace are due a win. But Brisbane State High isn’t the place they’re going to find one.
P.S The Terrace Second XV are apparently doing very well. Stay away from the Queens St Mall until after the competition finishes. Trust me.
Spikhaza: Incoming
RuggasXV: This is tough. Really tough. Terrace seem to be slowly improving (a bit too late) but State High in their last home fixture… I’d have to say the latter by 5.
Ipswich Grammar at Nudgee College
TheKing: Ipswich Grammar’s forward pack will love this fixture, but Nudgee’s superior ball playing skills will get the job done. It will be close, but Nudgee are just too classy 1-15. A team will always beat a collection of Individuals.
Spikhaza: incoming
RuggasXV: This one will be a brutal battle. Some huge cattle at work here but the butcher stripes are just that class above. Also it’s their last home game (you can see the trend with my tips). TSS by 17
