Scots 80 — Shore 17Jasdec avatar

by “Jasdec”

Big game for Shore, big score for Scots.

First Half

It was sunny and 24 degrees at Bellevue Hill on Saturday; a smaller crowd viewed this match and by the end most were shaking their heads.

Yasmin going in for no.1
Yassmin going in first try

It took three minutes on the end of a good backline movement to see (11) Matt Crafts score in the corner which was quickly followed by a try to (14) Christian Yassmin in the opposite corner. Both kicks were successful by (15) Andrew Kellaway and the score was 14 – 0 Scots.

Shore then threw everything they had at a resolute Scots defensive line to no avail.

Over the next 15 minutes Shore had the majority of the ball and with at least five penalties camped themselves in the Scot’s half.

Repeated infringements at the ruck saw (2) Jamaine Crossley of Scots given a yellow card.

The resulting play had a scrum to Shore which saw (8) Angus Cooke pick the ball up at the back, dummy to Emery and go through the defence to score near the posts. Jack Clancy’s conversion hit the upright with the score 14 – 5 Scots.

Andrew Kellaway then scored the try of the match from his quarter with two big right palms to the outside backs and then use his speed and swerve to evade the fullback to score near the posts. (10) Callum Styles missed the conversion and the score was 19 – 5 Scots.

With five minutes left before half time Scots hooker Crossley returned in time to see Matt Crafts go in for his second try which Kellaway converted for a 25 – 5 scoreline to Scotsat halftime.

Second Half

Scots came out with all guns blazing and scored three quick tries to bring the score to 45 – 5 after five minutes which put the matter beyond doubt. Shore tried to keep themselves in the match however everything they tried was shut down quickly and efficiently.

Starkey then scored his second try which was followed by one to (7) Hamish Dunbar under the posts. Kellaway had no problem in converting both to bring the score to 59 – 5 after 18 minutes in the second half.

After some good consistent play by Shore in the Scots quarter, they scored through (2) Oliver Stump between the corner and the upright which was converted by Jack Clancy. 59 – 12 Scots.

Nick Kellaway to score
Nick Kellaway – try coming up

Despite the replacement of (10)Styles, (13) Porter and (15) Andrew Kellaway in the last 17 minutes it didn’t prevent Scots scoring a further three tries to (5) Nick Kellaway, (14) Christian Yassmin and (12) Ben Starkey all of which were converted by replacement fullback Angus O’Connell to bring the score to 80 – 12 Scots.

A late try to (6) Henry Wrench of Shore went unconverted in the last few minutes of the game to bring up the final score 80 – 17 Scots.

The teams

Scots were on song from the opening whistle and scored the majority of their tries from long distance efforts through the backline which was very good again this week.

Shore tried all day however were unable to match a strong Scots unit across the paddock.

The Players

Harvey Duncan stops a try

Scots — (12) Starkey , (11)Crafts and (14)Yassmin hit their straps today with (15) Andrew Kellaway back to his dangerous self for this match. All the forwards did their jobs effectively with the two locks, (4) Rudolph and (5) Nick Kellaway very effective in attack and defense.

Shore — (9) Emery (10) Clancy and (13) Duncan were the pick of the Shore team and tackled themselves to a standstill against a very effective backline. The loose forwards, (7) Woodhill (8) Cook and (6)Wrench tried all day.

Wrap Up

Scots were too good and too strong across the park which was reflected in the scoreline. When they scored tries it was usually two or three in quick succession which saw the score elevate quickly.
