Flyer Required?
What I found most disapointing from a Wallabies perspective this match was the few times we made clean breaks we struggled to instantly finish them, with Folau and A.A.Cooper just needing someone quick on their shoulder to finish their efforts. This made me look over the team list and wonder whether we are just a little short on pace in the backs. While there is no slouch among them, we don’t have a player that can effortlessly finish any overlap with sheer velocity.
In the past we’ve had flyers like Drew Mitchell, Lachie Turner, Rod Davies and Ben Tune. They aren’t the complete player that say Adam Ashley Cooper is but their pace would give them the ability to finish what might be the only opportunity they get and chances can be rare in tests. For this reason I think Henry Speight must be on the next team sheet. He didn’t do much to warrant it in his match against the Barbarians, but he was freshly back from a hamstring strain so you can’t dwell on that performance too much. Henry has pace and also an amazing ability to use what little space he might be given to do his job and as that is pretty much a winger’s job, if he can do that better than any of our current options he should get the gig.
