Waverley v. Trinity
by “Anonymous Al”
Waverley got up in a thriller over a valiant Trinity side at Death Valley to mark the end of the 2014 rugby season.
First half
The Trinity forwards started the game strongly to lay the foundations for a slick Ryan Longville five pointer. When George Corias scored it looked like it was going to be Trinity’s day; they were dominating. 10-0 Trinity.
The Waves forwards fought back to gain good field position to give Dion Narayan the chance to dart through a gap and cross under the posts. The try was converted by winger Matt Rains. 10-7 Trinity.
Longville struck again when the Trinity backs put the ball through quick hands to see the young winger cross out wide. 15-7 Trinity.
With the clock winding down to half time, Waverley’s young gun fullback Jackson Mohi chimed into the bbackline, beat three defenders and scored a brilliant individual try. Tyzac Bailey converted.
Half time score: 15-14 Trinity
Second half
In a gruelling and evenly contested match Trinity slipped up to give two penalties away within kicking distance. Bailey potted both with the big Waverley crowd roaring their approval in the background. 20-15 Waverley.
The arm wrestle was even and uncompromising; it looked like the Waves would hold them out but the big mobile Trinity pack rolled down field to set up a scoring chance. 9 Angus Humphries gave a deft flick pass for the rampaging George Corias to score his second try. Converted by Justin Fish. 22-20 Trinity.
With only a few minutes remaining and the play at mid field, Waverley’s 9 Fred Guitronich and fly half Bailey fired out quick passes to give Henry Patterson space to get outside his opposite number. He careered downfield, drew the fullback and offloaded to flyer Mohi who raced away to score the match winner.
The Double V just got them in a nail biter.
Final score: 25-22 Waverley
The teams
Both teams did themselves, coaches and schools proud with the way they competed in a very entertaining game that could have gone either way.
The players
Waverley
Fred Guitronich, Tyzac Bailey, centres Henry Patterson and Tom Fuller all played well. Young gun 15 Jackson Mohi showed exceptional skill and speed in scoring two tries. Bailey’s kicking game was good.
Forwards Will Picone, Michael Boatswain and Lachlan Spurr worked hard all game.
Trinity
Harry McLennan, Anthony Nguyen and George Corias were a handful for the Waverley defenders. Liam Rasch was dominant in the lineout. Crafty scrum half Angus Humphries never stopped trying to outsmart the opposition and Ryan Longville was a stand out.
The Wrap up
Both teams competed fiercely and left nothing out on the field. The atmosphere was electric with the Year 12 players competing in their last game and with the big vocal crowd cheering them on. Both schools can be encouraged for next season with having so many good young players emerge this year.
The Scoring
