The Australian Sevens squad to take part in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi has been named after a final selection camp held in Canberra. This will be the fourth time Rugby Sevens has featured at the Commonwealth Games and Australia will be looking to better their best finish of a Bronze medal at the inaugural tournament in Kuala Lumpur in 1998. Australia have been drawn along side arch rivals England, Namibia and Sri Lanka in Pool D for the 2 day tournament which takes place on October 11 and 12. The squad have been put through their paces under the…
Usually Green and Gold Rugby focus on the playing side of things. This week I spoke to a person who without there would be no game, whose decisions are often criticised and people think could do better. No, I’m not talking about Wallabies coach Robbie Deans, but the man in the middle with the whistle, the referee, or sir as some like to call. Green and Gold Rugby were lucky enough to have a one on one chat with Sydney Shute Shield and IRB 7’s circuit referee Andrew Lees to see what it’s like to be a ref.
New Zealand have put on a devastating display of Rugby to take out the Junior World Championship 62-17 over a shell shocked Australian side. The writing was on the wall for the Australian side who knocked on from the kick off and conceded a try after just 33 seconds. This set the tone for the rest of the half as New Zealand brought a fast paced game that Australia just couldn’t match. Australia were finally able to gain some possession but were guilty of coughing up ball in crucial areas that were punished by a committed New Zealand side that…

The Brumbies went to Christchurch knowing what was required of them to continue their run in this years installment of Super Rugby. Sadly 80 minutes later that run had ended by a score of 40-22 at the hands of a Crusaders team hell bent on getting their season back on track after 3 straight defeats and hungrier to play semi finals Rugby. The home team were expected to be suffering the effects of travelling back from the Republic but showed none of this as they put the sword through a rather disappointing Brumbies outfit. If it wasn’t for Daniel Carter’s…
It all comes down to 80 minutes of rugby this Friday night. The equation for both teams is simple – win and progress to the semi finals. Lose and they can plan for next season and play in the Internationals or head back to Club Rugby. The Brumbies head into the final regular season match on the back of 2 bonus point victories against the Reds and Highalnders, whilst the Crusaders are coming off a heart breaking loss after the siren loss to the Bulls in Pretoria. In addition, losses to the Stormers and Western Force have hurt their chances…
Saturday’s clash between the CA Brumbies and the Otago Highlanders will mark the end of a journey for two outstanding servants to the Brumbies – George Smith and Stirling Mortlock. Smith will most likely be heading to an overseas club, whilst Mortlock will taking up a 3 year contract with the Melbourne Rebels. Despite a recent injury George Smith will take his place in the team, meanwhile a recurring back injury has denied Mortlock the proper farewell he deserves.
The CA Brumbies rolled the dice and came up winners in their Australian derby against the Queensland Reds. It was a match they needed to win to keep alive their finals dream and they did so in convincing style with a 32-12 victory and secure a bonus point in front of a vocal Canberra crowd. The home team dominated the early exchanges and starved the visitors of possession and at one stage enjoyed 71% of the ball. They finally put on a display that would put come confidence back in the fans that saw less kicking and a more adventurous…
The Brumbies take on the Reds this Saturday night in a game which is important to both teams’ seasons. The Brumbies were heralded by most experts as the best chance amongst the Australian teams to make the finals. However, after a season of disappointment to most fans, they are now passing the last chance saloon as they somehow have a mathematical chance of still making the semi-finals. Maybe the planets will need to align also.
BREAKING NEWS: Matt Giteau receives a $5000 fine only Brumbies fly half Matt Giteau has tonight escaped suspension but copped a $5,000 fine for comments made regarding referee Steve Walsh. Giteau fronted the SANZAR judiciary and gave his version of the comments made about Walsh being appointed to the Brumbies game against the Reds this Saturday. After around 1 hour of proceedings, it was deemed that Giteau was guilty of breaching the code of conduct and that a fine would be imposed. The decision is a relief to all in the Brumbies camp as a suspension would cripple the Brumbies…
It may not be as big as the NSW v Qld rivalry, but the ACT and NSW have had some interesting battles over the years. Although Super Rugby commenced in 1996, the battles and niggles on and off the field between the two had been ongoing for some 20 years before then. The first documented game was in 1975 at a bleak oval in South Canberra at Narrabundah, not far from the current Brumbies training base. Well before this correspondent’s time, a trip to the National archives shows the NSW team getting up 14-12.
The Brumbies had a chance to show everyone they were title contenders in their match against Wellington. After 80 minutes of ‘Rugby’ they ended up showing they were still pretenders with a 23-13 loss and one of the worst games the crowd at Canberra Stadium have seen in a long time. Robbie Deans and his assistants were also on hand to run their eye over potential Wallabies but on that showing, probably should have stayed at home. (ED: or gone to QLD!) For those who didn’t see the game and looked at the stats would be thinking ‘The Brumbies should…
The CA Brumbies have named a re-shuffled lineup for their Capitals clash against the Hurricanes on Friday night. In a clash which is vital to both teams finals chances, the Brumbies will be looking to gain some momentum and confidence off the back of last weeks demolition of the Cheetahs before heading towards the finals, whilst the Hurricanes who are coming off the bye, will be looking to get their season back on track and get their first win since round 3.
It’s taken 603 minutes of Rugby in 2010 for the Brumbies to finally score 4 tries in a match and capture the elusive bonus point. Not only did they score 4 tries, they added another 5 for a match total of 9 in a 61-15 demolition of the Cheetahs. There could, and should, have been many more however too many dropped balls inside the Cheetahs 22m zone made for frustrating viewing.
It is now time for the Brumbies to show their hand if they want to be serious title contenders for the 2010 season. The team is now in the middle of a favorable run to the finals and need to start winning, and convincingly, before starting to put fear into other teams in and around the top 4. To get the ball rolling, they take on the Free State Cheetahs on Saturday night who were outgunned against the Waratahs. Only a pre game downpour stopped the Waratahs points total matching their efforts against the Lions and with reasonable conditions expected…
The CA Brumbies have marked Julian Huxley’s return to Super Rugby with a dramatic win over the Chiefs. It was a game where the Brumbies needed a victory before their bye next week, and they did their best to not win. The Brumbies started the game with the obligatory out on the full from the kick off, which is becoming an all too familiar scene. It looked like it would be one of those games where things wouldn’t go right.
The CA Brumbies have rung the changes for their clash with the Chiefs this Friday. This game sees the return to the match day squad of Julian Huxley, who returns to Super Rugby after a well documented battle with a brain tumour. Other changes in the squad see newcomers Michael Hooper and Colby Faingaa elevated from the Brumby Runners squad and the return of Stirling Mortlock will be welcomed after the team struggled to contain a rampant Blues backline in the previous game.
The Auckland Blues have produced an entertaining second half display to defeat the ACT Brumbies 39-34 in Auckland. In a game that could be described as a game of two halves, the Blues showed what they’re capable of in front of their home crowd at Eden Park. The game marked Blues skipper Keven Mealamu’s 100th game for the franchise and after the opening minutes things didn’t look too promising. The Brumbies dominated the opening exchanges with good field position and with the majority of
The CA Brumbies have made two changes to their line up to take on the Blues in Auckland on Friday night. Outside centre Stirling Mortlock has succumbed to the shoulder/neck injury he sustained in victory over the Shorks last week and will be replaced by Tyrone Smith. Two debutants take their place on the bench in outside back Andrew Smith and reserve prop Jerry Yanuyanutawa, who takes over from Guy Shepherdson. The game is shaping up as tight contest with the Blues coming off the bye and the Brumbies travelling across the ditch on the back of a hard fought…
