Queens Park, affectionately known ‘Death Valley’ in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs, hosted a highly entertaining game of rugby between Waverley College and St.Aloysius College.

Waverley 53 def. St Aloysius 12
Waverley was attempting to build on their epic clash against Barker the week before in order to keep that glimmer of hope alive that the Henry Plume Shield could be theirs if results fell in their favour.
St. Aloysius was coming off a dominating win over Knox and it was thought that they could pull off the upset. The atmosphere of Queens Park is always one of excitement with a large crowd of energetic Waverley supporters present, extremely vocal after an aggressive 2nds fixture.
1st Half
Waverley received the ball off the kickoff and the game was very tight for the early exchanges with aggressive defence and good forward play from both teams, particularly Williams for Aloysius and Koutsoukis for Waverley . Waverley troubled the scorer first with a drop goal from O’Donnell. 3-0 to Waverley. After the subsequent kickoff, Johnson for Waverley broke through and found Farley to score under the posts, with Patterson converting for a 10-0 lead.
However, the Aloysius boys weathered the storm and marched downfield, with the aid of penalties, and Luke Vevers managed to slice through the Waverley defence and score, which was converted for a 10-7 scoreline. In similar fashion, some infringements from Waverley and some strong runs from Williams and Jordan led to St.Aloysius playing deep in Waverley territory and Vevers managed to create an overlap on the right wing but went through himself for another great try. The conversion was missed but St.Aloysius had a 12-10 lead at halftime. The 1st half came at a large cost for St.Aloysius with a number of players suffering injury, including Rory Vevers.
2nd Half
The 2nd term began with St. Aloysius receiving and again the game looked like the Aloysius boys were holding the Waverley backs in check. However, Waverley gathered momentum from the mobile forward pack and from short range prop Budrodeen scored but the conversion was missed and Waverley took the lead 15-12. It was from this point that the dam burst and Waverley piled on the points.
Johnson scored next again from within the 22, with the conversion successful, Waverley 22-12. The score again increased when Patterson kicked through and though the ball was appearing to go over the sideline it bounced perfectly and he plucked it from the air and scored. St.Aloysius, however were not disheartened by these quick-fire tries but with a large number of injured players it was a difficult challenge to fight back and score.
The St.Aloysius defence was strong in the middle with Booth tackling well. However, Patterson again went through and scored, while No.8 Powter went through on the right side and scored, apparently, after it appeared he dropped the ball. Cupitt-Osborne broke through on the left edge and scored and, then later, went over for his 2nd try after re-gathering his own kick and on that the fulltime whistle was blown with the scoreline at 53-12.
Aloysius
Despite the scoreline, the Aloysius boys showed heart in standing up to the Waverley attack. Vevers was an obvious standout with 2 tries and displayed strong defense against the forwards that ran at him. His kicking game was also very good. Williams was strong as always in the forwards, however it was difficult to identify the other Aloysius forwards due to many being replacements from the 2nds, who were outmuscled by the Waverley forwards.
Townsend played well keeping the speedy Smith in check but the left winger, who I think was Mytkowski , was at times vulnerable. The halfback Kennedy controlled the forwards well and the centres defended strongly for most of the game. However, in the end the injury toll that St. Aloysius experience had its effect on the team and they could not replicate their 1st half performance.
Waverley
With the scoreline how it was Waverley had a number of standout players. Man of the match Johnson was a handful for St.Aloysius all day breaking the line a number of times and scoring once. Patterson, again, played well scoring 2 tries and presenting difficulty for the opposition.
The whole forward pack played very well with Powter, Budrodeen, Hooper and Masero-Sheridan leading strong charges and Heeney defending strongly. Whitaker and O’Donnell directed play smartly using their forwards and strong backs to great effect. Farley and Cupitt-Osborne were strong in the centres, however Smith and Worthington were pretty quiet on the wings, though it can be argued that there was little opportunity.
Elsewhere in the CAS, Barker officially won the Henry Plume Shield with a 32-5 victory over Trinity, and Knox disposed of Cranbrook 33-10.
