The comebacks and the newcomer
At number five of the Tuesday Top Five are the comebacks.
David Pocock, Stephen Moore and Dave Dennis came back from injury, and Karmichael Hunt returned from the AFL and played his first professional game in union on Australian soil. For the Chiefs, Sonny Bill Williams returned from cashing up in the NRL.
It’s good news for the Wallabies and Michael Cheika that some of the best Aussies players have successfully returned to play, and that some like Nick Cummins are not so far away from coming back.
Not so much for the Wallabies, but for the whole of rugby union, it is a good news that one of the most recognisable faces outside of union circles, Sonny Bill Williams, has made his comeback to the 15-man code in the Chief’s’ win against the Blues.
Also a good news story (although his first game will not end up in the collection of great performances) was that the debut of Karmichael Hunt with the Reds added interest to the first round.
The player has been thrown to the deep end due to the injury of Quade Cooper and James O’Connor not being ready, but he has raised his hand and stepped into the hot seat. If people still have doubts about his elevation in the Red’s leadership group, please think again.
