The resurgent Harlequins defeated University 53-10 at Rugby Park on Saturday to close to within a point of fourth spot in the Tasmanian Rugby competition.
Quins converted a 15-0 lead at the break into a procession after weathering a two-try comeback by the Red Men in the second half, combining mauling and striking power through an indifferent Uni defensive line. Repeated turnovers provided ample opportunities for both teams, but the Quins backs showed greater composure to control the contest throughout.
Harlequins’ effort around the field was typified by the defensive contribution of Vaha Afa, the solidity of Chris Lobley and the strong running of Jamon Starcovic. Back-rowers Fua Pomana and Don Leota relished University’s slow defensive line speed.
University’s fly-half Michael Kodjiolka was rewarded for a sterling defensive effort by scoring a solo try from over 50 metres. He found solid support from Danny Hoyle, Lachlan Young and Brad Doran, but the Red Men heaped pressure on themselves through poor tackling technique and fractured defensive line as phases progressed.
The Eastern Suburbs Roosters found themselves unlucky 22-17 losers to Glenorchy Stags at North Warrane, denied a win through poor discipline late in the match after securing a 14-10 lead early in the second half. Seasoned Stags campaigners Glen Mullaney, Matt Graham and Josh Dorahy restored a simple driving strategy that had been disrupted by the expansive Roosters backline. Good attacking flair was shown by Stags backs Ben Cowen and Matt Sproule. For Easts, Barry Wheeler and Brendan Elliott contested severely at the breakdown and fullback Dan McCathy tackled well. Jake Hyland and Judd Sherratt scored enterprising tries to consolidate the improvement in the Roosters’ back play.
Devonport Bulls finished strongly to crush Launceston 48-8 in perfect conditions at Devonport, Mark Meo scoring five tries and four conversions and Shaun Puke a hat-trick for the home side. Johann Joubert also featured strongly for the Bulls. ‘They were too well-drilled and organised and denied us our game plan’, said Launceston coach Ray Burgess. Launceston received wholehearted service from Colin Montgomery, Perry Chancellor and Sam Rice.
Leaders Taroona Penguins overcame a hesitant first half to lower Burnie Emus’ colours 29-5 at Burnie, despite efforts of an aggressive Emus pack. The Penguins’ effort commemorated Stuart Smith’s 200th appearance for Taroona, and good performances by Anthony Lean, Charlie Holmes and returning fullback Nick Elliott completed the picture. Dean Apiti, Laurie Apiata and Dylan Lawrie maintained a high standard for the Emus.
Hobart Lions maintained momentum, securing six tries to two in defeating AMC Vikings 42-10 at Royal Park. The victors’ best were Derek Clack, Alim Khalafan and Mark Ritchie. AMC’s skipper Hugh Kanely maintained his consistent form, with strong efforts from inside backs Andreas Casper and Joel Wilson.
