After a long pre-season it’s back to the grind for the Australia Men’s and Women’s Sevens team who are primed for a big 2018 of Sevens action, with the first leg of the HSBC World Sevens Series kicking off on Thursday in Dubai. Both sides will be looking to improve on their 2016-17 performances, particularly the men who finished in sixth place although injuries did hinder their 2016-17 aspirations. The Aussie women fell short on day two in the HSBC Women’s Sevens Series , when they made it all the way to the final only to lose to trans Tasman rivals New Zealand. Australia 5-28 New Zealand The last meeting of these two teams was in the group stage, when New Zealand prevailed 21-14 however, stunning runs by the same two ensured that they would meet again but this time on a bigger scale. Australia’s quest for silverware came to an end on day three at the Sydney Sevens, despite starting the day in spectacular fashion when they played Wales in a quarterfinal clash. Australia 26-0 Wales The quarter final against the Welsh was a breeze in the park for the Aussies, when they trounced the visitors 26-0. Henry Hutchinson scored the first try of the match when he sprinted down the left hand touchline. It’s back to business as usual now for the Australian Men’s and Women’s Sevens team as they look to start the Sevens season at Dubai this weekend. The Women’s Sevens team has had an outstanding season, as they won the first ever Women’s Sevens gold medal at this years Rio Olympics and they even won their maiden world championship title. On top of that star player Charlotte Caslick has been named world sevens player of the year.
