Tahs have a crack in the rain

Tahs looking good with the Horne
Tahs looking good with the Horne

Waratahs 40  Cheetahs 17

Don’t spoil a good story.  Don’t tell Tah Man or the long suffering Tahs fans that their team is at the top of the comp just because they haven’t had their bye yet.  Let them enjoy it for a week, at least.

The Tahs deserve to be there for their effort tonight.  The rain fell and the ground got chopped up but the Tahs had a crack in the wet.  They had a good first half in those conditions and though they lost their shape after oranges, especially when the bench was cleared, they kept running the pill when they could.

The only serious finger wagging that could be waved at them is that they let the Cheetahs in for their 2 tries in the last 8 minutes of the game.

It was a damn pity that the rain came because the Cheetahs like having a crack too, but with only 37% possession and not being able to find the handle on the wet ball, they did it tough.  To be fair: they were missing two world class flankers: Juan Smith and Heinrich Brüssow, and had other absentees also, but it doesn’t explain why 27 tackles were missed.

The Tahs were too good even without Palu and Waugh.  We knew Mowen could play well at no.8 because we had seen him there before but 7. Chris Alcock, who doesn’t play there in the Sydney club competition and is often in 2nd grade anyway, had a blinder in his starting debut.

It was only after the ground announcer named the scorer of a try after a 5cm jinking run that we realised that “Angry Al” Baxter had scored his first Super try in his 100th game.  The scrums weren’t so good when he left the field and Kepu came on to play THP.

LHP Fat Cat Robinson didn’t look that good in some of the scrums tonight. Once it looked like he lifted the Cheetahs THP, and a mad Irishman (a tautology?) in front of me said that the Cheetahs should have got the penalty, not the Tahs.  But WP Nel has been standing up under pressure since February and the Irishman didn’t have any credibility because he is a fan of Munster THP Bull Hayes.

12 Barnes had his best game of the year though the jury will still be out until he plays like that in top company.  The same could be said about 15 Beale; he won’t be allowed to play his fizzy incisive game in crunch matches, but it was refreshing to see a Tahs fullback posing question after question.  It’s been a while.

13 Horne was back to best form after a long  layoff, but it was disturbing to see him retire from the field near the end of the game and leaving his team one man short.  One hopes the ham isn’t strung again.

The Tahs have had more than their share of luck this year but they have gutsed out wins against the odds also. They showed tonight that they could play well in bad conditions too.  Forget the table – their next two games against the Crusaders and the Brumbies will define their season better than arithmetic.

After tonight’s performance they seem to be men for all seasons and all places; and you’d have to back them to do well either side of their bye.

The above two column exercise used an extra “enter” after “no” for the first column because otherwise the coloured second column would start a line lower.

Three-fifths and two-fifths exercise – did not work

[two_fifth last=”yes”]And all our troubles in the deep bosom of the ocean, buried.[/two_fifth]

Note that using %%%% and not fractions cause problems when browser zoom is used – investigate using tables and wrap around

The above 60%/40% split in column width seems to work in a table of one row and two columns – yet using the non-table two column for text method is affected by %%%%s – [although standard 1/2, 1/2 or 1/3, 1/3, 1/3, or 2/3, 1/3 as fractions usage is fine.]

Using fifths as fractions does not work, as mentioned above.

Note – In the 60%/40% split (example above) make sure that col style instruction after first table instruction still appears in text tag. It seems to disappear from the text tag when the blog is updated (and maybe before publishing when a draft is saved also). Otherwise the blog may be at the mercy of browser zoom use after you update.
