Toowoomba Grammar at Brisbane Grammar (41-19)
Nic Darveniza (TheKing)
Toowoomba came down the range with a point to prove after a narrow loss in Round 1 and a respectable loss to heavyweights Churchie in Round 2. The bye let the team rest, and it was this that won them the game in a frenzied opening to the second half, outscoring BGS 4 tries to 2 to close out the match after a hotly contested first.
It didn’t take a genius to figure out that the game plans for both teams would be to kick early and often, but Brisbane Grammar didn’t get that memo prior to kick off – their first three possessions amounted to a line break kick return to fullback Tom Sly, and two dropped long passes inside 40.
The second dropped pass was knocked on, and Toowoomba exerted some good scrum pressure on the loosehead side to earn a penalty. Quickly tapped, Tooowoomba earned another penalty next phase around the breakdown, and Inside Center Hamish Stewart kicked for points 15 out and dead in front.
3 points down just minutes in to the match saw Brisbane take stock and reevaluate their options. Wily fullback Sly targeted the sloppy remains of a beautiful Northgate cricket pitch with high and low kicks, which were returned in due course.
In the midst of the aerial ping-pong match, a deft kick caught Toowoomba wing X out of position, allowing livewire Grammar wing Oli Fison to regather and carry the ball 30 metres and in to the Toowoomba 22, shaking 4 defenders on a long run.
More to come soon.
