Why does work always keep distracting us from whats really important in life?
And when I say “really important”, is there any doubt that I mean the latest happenings in QLD GPS Rugby?!
With university mid-semesters wreaking havoc on the free time of the writers, coverage of the QLD GPS comp has been patchy over the last few weeks. To make up for it, please accept this peace offering: two blockbuster Games of the Round from the last two weeks, as well as short match reviews for each of the 6/8 we couldn’t get to.
Round 6 was headlined by a phenomenal display of Rugby from the Anglicans on the Gold Coast, crushing Southport out of the Premiership race at home for the first time in 14 years, winning back the Ben Schooley Memorial Trophy in the process. RuggasXV was in attendance, and recorded his thoughts on the fixture that sealed the deal for a Churchie Premiership 7 years in the making.
While that game all but decided the Premiership, Spikhaza was one of many lucky enough to be there for possibly the match of the season, Gregory Terrace at BBC. BBC got off to a roaring lead early, before Terrace ran riot in the second for a tense finish. A touch judge denied Terrace a try in final play, giving BBC the win in an extraordinary game of schoolboy rugby 38-34.
Ipswich Grammar hosted BGS in Round 6, coming back from a 17-15 halftime deficit to post a strong second half performance, with a final score of 37-22 the final. Ipswich had won three in a row, while Brisbane dropped to 5 consecutive losses on the season.
To wrap up the round, State High travelled to Nudgee. Though a thrashing was predicted by many, at halftime Nudgee led by only 3 before putting on the pressure in the second. In the face of a withering onslaught BSHS crumbled, allowing Nudgee to climb to a 41-7 victory.
Round 7 saw Gregory Terrace host eternal rivals Nudgee in their annual Battle of the Colours clash for the Green and Gold Rugby Match of the Round. I cast my eye over the 25-17 win to Nudgee below.
Meanwhile, another absolute belter of a match was played out between the Grammar Schools of Ipswich and Toowoomba. TGS led 33-21 at halftime before Ipswich came alive in the second, going on to lead 34-33 with just a minute remaining. Toowoomba Grammar were awarded a penalty just as the match drew to a close, and a clutch kick won the day for the Mountain lads.
BBC showed some form for the second week in a row with a big win over Brisbane Grammar 45-5, and The Southport School prevailed over Brisbane State High by scoring 2 unanswered tries in the second to snatch a 24-15 win after trailing at the half.
