In a heartwarming display of community spirit, the Hurricanes Poua recently traded their rugby boots for riding boots to lend a hand at the Hutt Valley Riding for the Disabled (RDA).
The team rolled up their sleeves and tackled tasks like water blasting the stage and ramp, cleaning the kickboards in the arena, and washing down horse stalls. Hutt Valley RDA Centre Coordinator, Bronwyn Hussey, expressed her gratitude, stating, “The Poua players and management were awesome. They enthusiastically embraced all of the dirty jobs that we never seem to have time to do… We really appreciate the mahi.”
Captain Jackie Patea-Fereti reflected on the experience, saying, “It was a really rewarding day for us… Spending time with these incredible people and learning about the work they do really reminded us of how powerful movement and community can be.”
This initiative is part of the Hurricanes Poua’s ongoing efforts to make a positive impact beyond the game, aiming to create lasting connections in the community and influence the growth of women’s rugby in the area.
The visit also marked the conclusion of the players’ first official pre-season camp, which included a training session at Linton Military Camp and a stay at Takapuwahia Marae in Porirua, before returning to NZCIS for intensive training.
Hutt Valley RDA continues to provide valuable services to those who need it most, and the Hurricanes Poua are proud to support this important work.
