0 – mins – kick off

8 – mins – best game of the season so far, awesome passing and running, both beale and leahleahphano  have made early mistakes. George Smith has pulled off two miracle balls and a leg pilfer. End to end stuff, brumbies end up with a penalty after tahs have been called offside. Gerrard nails it.

16 – mins – has been a bit more scrappy, all scrums have been called free kicks to the team with the feed. Chisholm down after a headknock but is back on his feet. 5 scrum resets, only 1 completed scrum… no change to the score

20 – mins – scrum penalty, reff has had enough of the jiggery pokery in between the front rows, lets hope this sorts it out. Beale with a 40+metre attempt… missed, off the upright…

27 – mins – tahs have all the lineouts and brumbies have all the rucks… still an arm wrestle, tahs have had a lot more time in the attacking areas though.

30 – mins – brumbies won a couple of linouts, one was a tah lineout, have made a few attacking plays but touched borth sidelines in the process.

31 – mins – Tahs let brumbies into their 22 for the first time…

32 – mins – Brumbies pick and drive several times, palu gives away a bad offside… he’s sent off for ‘repeated infringements’ (very controversial, no warning) Gerrard nails the penalty from point blank.

34 – mins – make up call, Mortlock apparently cleaning a player without the ball… (thats the purpose of cleaning out)… Beale gets one from point blank range… he hits the upright again and misses…

37 – mins – Beale kicks attackingly and taken out, looked innocent, but was without arms, Hoiles in trouble, Tahs should climb three closer, Beale still down… but will try and make it third time lucky…

38 – mins – SPRAYS IT WIDE…. RADAR off for beale 0/3, only one was a little hard. 60% possostion, no points for tahs, they look worried.

40 – mins – brumbies offside, Beale to take another shot. Lets, see if the tahs can get 50% closer. BEALE NAILS it, the hardest of all his attempts.

Half time! Looked a great game after the first 8 minutes but then got into a Tah dominated foreward battle. Way too close to call, all i know is i want to see some tries. Some great defense on display though. Palu should be back 1 min into the 2nd half. Tahs deserve to be ahead but aren’t so who knows whatt he 2nd half will bring.

Heres my Fav stat. Gerrard 2/2, Beale 1/4…

2nd Half:

45 – mins – TRY ASHLEY-COOPER! Tahs go well in first 2 mins and get Palu back on but brumbies take 14 phases and travel 75metres and then Cooper out paces Tiqiri for the corner, Gerrard misses extras. The play went, from left wing ruck, to Leah, then a pass that went behind three runners to Gerrard, then a double cut out to Mortlock, who got Tiqiri wrong footed and Gave it to AAC who ran and dived over.

49 – mins – Hoiles injured, replaced by Salvi, Salvi into number 8.

49 – mins – Chisholm knocked out again… heavy hit, he’ll be out for next week too. Looks like the big Timani will come on, they call him WhyCliff Tamani in the ACT. Brumbies are going down like flies…. Tah ball in the brumby 22.

50 – mins – Brumbies called for collapsing scrum, kickable penalty. Beale gets it.

63 – mins – Brumbies get close through G.Smith and Holmes but Robinsons hands in the ruck get unnoticed and Smith gets pinged for rucking. Tahs out of trouble for now. Burgess of Sheehan on.

63 – mins – Gerrard and TSmith both make great runs in the build up. Both teams look buggered, Mortlock looks injured. Ben Alexander looks to have scored but waiting on TMO….TRY ALEXANDER, the replacement prop gets the goods. Moore steals it off sheehan to put Alex over. Gerrard gets the Extras.

66 – mins – Alexander another linebreak! Leah grubbers through, Beale takes it over for a 5m scrum to the brums though.

69 – mins – another grubber from leah, AAC hacks on brilliantly, but slightly too far for Fainifo.

72 – mins –  Tahs hold onto possession but nothing comes from it and AAC intercepts, flicks it to ben hand who hoofs it down feils, well picked up and cleared by Turner who beats AAC and Phibbs to the ball.

75 – mins – Tahs backs havent touched the ball this half and the Brums forewards have caught up, the brums get a scrum penalty and Gerrard kicks them more than 2 converted tries ahead.

77 – mins – TRY TURNER, Tiqiri touches the ball and kicks cross feild, caught by Turner, and Rathbone misses an easy tackle… Helengahoo misses from the corner.

80 – mins – All over, Brumbies get the win.

Full time, the reff was terrible at scrum time. The tahs didn’t experiement enough in the 2nd half, the Brumbies wanted it more and showed more desperation.

Well done on the live scoring, and congrats to the Ponies on a well earned win.

How the fuck did Palu get 10 yet Hoiles committed a worse offense in our 22 and got off?

Did you see Turner’s quick tap in the second half where he was tackled after about 3 metres and the ponies won a penalty? That was the turning point for me.

you were already losing at that time. didn’t really turn anything.

tahs were a joke tonight. showed how much of a rubbish team they’ve been all year and got killed.
i really don’t think they’re at the end.

also beale is the worst fly half in australia

      Report
      • Moses on March 13, 2009 1:51 pm

at the time I believe it was 6-11, and the turnover led directly to territory which begat Alexander’s try.

        So yes, a turning point.

Still, had Kurtley worn his kicking boots we would have been a chance, we really can’t play a forward dominated game without a kicker on song.

  5. Patrick on March 13, 2009 1:14 pm

Beale is shocking. I’m sure if you work out how many times Tuqiri assists or scores per seconds in possession he is one of the most prolific players in the world. After all he typically only gets about 30 secs a game and most of them are up the duff in the traffic. Probably Turner too.

This season they don’t get 5 between them. I speculated about this last year but is really time to officially declare Beale another over-trumped next big thing from NSW. Along with Lyons, Frier SNK and of course the king, Waugh.

With Gits Barnes and Cooper, Beale is way out of the running.

(full disclosure: I have previously considered TPN and Palu potential candidates for that status. Palu is clearly the real deal, whilst TPN looks like he might actually be as well).

Does this mean the Brumbies are favorites ;) ?

In a losing team I thought TPN was one of the standout players. Did he outpoint “the best hooker in the world” do you think?

Moore set peice is still a little better, but he can’t compare TPN work around the field. TPN made some great metres and did some amazing tackles.

    Nice one Bobas.
The tah’s were boring as shite tonight. This was enterprise vs compromise. I thought Tahu really stopped the tahs midfeild doing anything. Mortlock was much better at 13 than at 12. The Tah’s only really excelled at scrum time and even then relied on the ref a bit. Leah played mad but it was an all round team effort that sealed the deal, go you wild horses.

  7. Juan Cote on March 13, 2009 8:30 pm

The Tahs backline showed just how poorly skilled they are, at least they tried to have a go at times. They don’t seem to have any ideas after about the third phase and with Portley’s limited passing game, the ball is always stuck around mid field. Most times when they went wide SNK was standing at no.10.
Tonight showed the Tahs frailties when they come up agaisnt teams that can match them in the forwards and with a fair few games against the stronger Sth African forwards packs coming up, this is a concern

    Report
  8. CanadianRugby on March 13, 2009 9:43 pm

As a ‘Tahs fan watching the game was truly painful.
First, I would like to highlight the truly awful performace by the refs. This had little to do with why the Waratahs lost, but the refs were bad.
Second, I think this was about the worst game anyone on the Waratahs have played, this is not the NORM for Beale, he was bad, but he has, and will be better. He’s 20, get off him.
TPN needs to learn to throw.
Finally, Brent Sheean is truly crap. Definately more interested in complaining to the ref and look dramatic than actually playing rugby. Tahs need to ditch him, for anyone, make Halanagau back up 9, I don’t care, just get ride of him.

Mortlock came in the side 3 minutes later right in front of the flags to clean out Dan Palmer. Same offence, different penalty. Hence the confusion.

Hoiles late no arms tackle was worthy of a yellow on it’s own merits

The brumbies never looked they were going to score then. It was stagnant play. That’s why Palu was so stupid to do it, an unneccesary prof foul. Yellow card, but u can’t seriously say it should have been a pen try.

Portley has lost confidence which clearly affects his decision making and execution – whether its influenced by his poor goal kicking or not, who knows – but it obviously increases the pressure on him. They need to give those duties to SNK or someone else so that he can get his ‘karma’ back.

Remember, according to the Sydney media he was going to be the next big thing and surely should have been a teenage Wallaby star….and as far as going to league goes, I thought they’d only be interested in a player that actually could tackle?

    Report
    • Pedro on March 14, 2009 5:31 am

Good call, most league players are still pretty good at union even when they cross over past their prime. You would be a brave manager to lure him over to league at the moment.

Although Beale undoubtably played a poor game, I think the Tah’s centre pairings are their weakness in the back line. They are generally quite shallow, like forwards in league. This doesn’t give beale much time to sum things up and reduces their ability to spread it wide. This game reminded me of when Aus played the all blacks with re-shuffled centres and morty effed them up.

The Waratahs just need to get the ball to Tiqiri and Turner more, not utilising them makes their backs very predictable.

Anyone have anything to say on Ben Alexander’s try… people around me were shouting down the ref for a ‘double move’ but the commentators were saying something about him being able to play the ball once he had gone to ground, are you aloud to play it forward?

TPN had a much better game, he was a shocker in last year’s international games, a sure fire miss. At least this time he bought his tackling game.

Horrific from sheenan to let him get the ball to score the try.
He just stood their with his hands in the air pleading to the ref while alexander took the ball from his feet.

Yes mate, in any direction so long as it is played straight away. Of course you generally place the ball behind you when you aren’t in a position to score a try.

The people around you were probably mungoes who nothing of other games except their own….

He didn’t try to get to his feet or anything. I guess someone could call it a double movement, but I have no problem with it. Normally you can place a ball once tackled, this looked no different you don’t have to put it backwards that’s just normally the best option. It’s just in slow-mo everything looks a bit dodgy.

Sheehan scored this try, giving it to Hoiles and then giving Alexander room.

I think Tuqiri would be upset AAC scored down his wing.

Rathbone let Turner in though, which was worse. Maybe its good he’s on the bench, lets hope he can get some form.

Beale seems worse than last season, I think the Tahs could benefit from having two dads in 10, beale in 12 and Tahu in 13, then having Horne and Tuqiri on the wings and Turner bring up the rear.

Twodads wont die wondering and that’s what you want from a number 10.

And he’s hungry for a shot, he’s over to europe next season to get to play in 10.
