The 2016 Inter-Brigade Rugby Competition is on again, show-casing all that is good about Army rugby. This year, the competition will be expanded to seven teams; in addition to mens and womens teams from 1, 3, 6 , 7, 16 and 17 Brigades, the Combined Arms Training Centre (CATC) will also be entering teams. My money, as always, is on my former Brigade (the mighty 3rd from Townsville, Qld) to dominate.
The Australian Army has a rich history of rugby competition, and indeed many ex-Army players have gone on to represent the Wallabies. In recent times, this list includes Wallaby #753 – Jim Williams 1999-2000 ^, and Wallaby #770 – Justin Harrison 2001-05 ^
Of course, the most famous ex-Army Wallaby is #280 – Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop 1932-34.
(^ = Not serving whilst representing)
The 2016 Inter-Brigade Rugby Competition will be conducted at Ballymore, Queensland between Monday 2 and Thursday 5 May 2016. The mens and womens squads for the Australian Army Rugby Union will be selected at the end of the Inter-Brigade Rugby Competition, and will represent the Army against Navy and Airforce at the ADF Championships.
