France 27 – New Zealand 22
O.K. Lets put all the crap to bed first. The excuse the Nuw Zulenders will use for their 22 – 27 defeat to Les Bleus will be that they were without McCaw, Carter, So’olialo, Ali Williams, Conrad Smith, Sivivatu, Wulf, Kahui, etc etc yawn!
However, let’s not forget that our continental friends, colloquially known as Le Coq Gaulois, were not without their own difficulties. Think Rougerie, Parra, Nallet, Harinodoquay, Bonnaire (all withdrew from the tour injured) and Mermoz, Guirado, Mas and Domingo who were late arrivals due to cup final commitments and not considered for this match (although the latter two eventually ended up on the bench). That about evens it up in my book.
Oh, and lets also remember that although the team the All Blacks fronted up with tonight was without some of those first choice players, with some local journo dubbing it as ‘one of the weakest in the last decade’, there was only one player in the starting side that hasn’t had at least some All Black experience. So, it WAS an All Black team and, the fact of the matter is, they lost to a better side.
This was not how it was supposed to go. An end of season tour by Les Bleus is usually a doddle for the All Blacks and the Wallabies. But make no mistake, times have changed. And haven’t they changed for the better. This was a real rugby test in every sense of the word. Le Froggies turned up to play with a forward pack that physically dominated the All Blacks in the first half to lead 17-6 just before halftime, when a terrific movement which originated in the All Black 22m resulted in a Liam Messam try courtesy of Cory Jane ,who did the bulk of the work.
In the second half, a few penalties were traded between the sides and then Maxime Medard intercepted a wayward Luke McAlister pass to score. Ma’a Nonu scored a late try but it wasn’t enough to overtake the exuberant French. They had led for the whole game and withstood severe pressure at the end to record their first win in New Zealand since 1994. And weren’t they a happy group of escargot at the finish?
So, what does all this mean for the Wallabies? Well, I guess we play these Frog dudes in a couple of weeks and I think they’re going to cause us a bit of a problem. Their set piece was pretty effective (lineouts and scrums – very solid). It might have just been me but I just got the feeling there were fewer of both during this match than there would normally be (changed rules notwithstanding)? Could’ve been the vin rouge, perhaps. Their defensive game was outstanding, muscling up and providing the ABs with little room to move. Trinh-Duc and Medard kicked intelligently, with the latter being able to peel off a fair bit of ground.
Attack – well, they are Le Francais and when they’re on song they can be a real handful. But it was at the breakdown that they excelled, effecting some turnover ball and having a commanding physical presence. The change back to international rules (without the ELV sanctions) obviously suit their playing style. Being European of course, they weren’t half bad at the maul as well.
Who do we need to look out for? The Ma’a Nonu clone ‘Mathew Bastard’ looks a likely lad, especially in defence – did a Stirlo on a few unsuspecting players (I think that’s his name….no, I’m not getting confused with Johnny Condom). Their loosies, in particular Piccamoles and Ouedraogo, were very effective both at the breakdown and as a link between forwards and backs. You can never turn your back on a French three-quarter either…. I guess some of those Perpignan and Clermont Avergne players who were in the club final may also re-appear.
No doubt there’ll be a slitting of wrists across the ditch for some and calls for Graham Henry’s head, which happens every time something out of the ordinary happens to their All Blacks…..like losing. If I were them I’d be a bit concerned about their defence, especially around the five eighth channel – classic example was Trinh-Duc’s try where about four of them, I think including all their loosies and fullback, fell off the tackle. I was surprised that they didn’t include Jamie McIntosh in the side – he’s got a bit of mongrel in him – just what you need against these guys.
Of the All Black team on the park Woodcock, Mealamu (replacement), Thorn, Muliaina, Jane, Donald and Nonu had reasonable games and will probably feature in the next round. They’ll no doubt make replacements as their injured players come online but I think a couple of them may have played their last test? They’re very unforgiving when it comes to rugby failure in the Land of the Long White Ewe……
Highlight of the match: apart from the Froggies actually winning, wasn’t it great to hear the Kiwi commentators, Nisbett and Smith in particular, whingeing towards the end when things weren’t going their way…it’s that bluddy ref’s fault AGAIN! The only disappointment was that Murray Mexted wasn’t there to share the joy…….
FRANCE 27 (Francois Trinh-Duc, Williams Servat, Maxime Medard tries; Julien Dupuy 3 cons 2 pens) defeated NEW ZEALAND 22 (Liam Messam, Ma’a Nonu tries; Stephen Donald 4 pens).

Did you miss Mexted?
I thought Fox filled his shoes manfully in the one eyed department?
And what’s wrong in calling for Henry’s head anyway?
I read somewhere the other day that his contract comes up for renewal in the next few months to take him to the World Cup. A few more of these losses and the Great Redeemer will meet his maker I suspect…..
I didn’t think Fox was too bad…..relatively astute analyst….for a Kiwi……looking forward to Foxy’s Dorkboard?
I would laugh bloody hard if Henry were reappointed…I think the bloke has been gifted with some rare talent in recent years that could coach themselves, and he has been lucky. Deans should be coaching them and I’ll bet when he eventually does, they will be special..NZRU, thanks for giving Wallabie a foot up!
I thought the French showed great strength at the breakdown and the all blacks were expecting nice tidy S14 courtesy.. Good on the Frogs. I would rather see us over commit at the breakdown against them and the Boks to shut down the counter rucking early. A warning – the new Smith won’t work against the French.. We need as many forwards out there as possible. It’s going to be all about ball security.. Maintaining possession when in the Red Zone
The ab’s were so disjointed, it was really painful. not too sure about your call on Donald. still rate him below Nick Evans. next week will be payback, we’ll soften ’em up for ya.
Nick Evans is a class act, no doubt about it….but he ain’t around and I can’t see him returning from Quinns in the near future. I guess its just a matter of when Dan the man is coming back?
I was just having a look at my notes on Donald from last night…..brilliant ruby red in colour, this blend is packed with fruity tannins….oh shit…..wrong page…..I didn’t really think he was the problem last night – he’s been a bridesmaid for a while now so I’d imagine they’ll retain him for a few more games yet.
That’s the problem, he’s not bad, he’s just not GREAT
Or are they softening you up for us?
Absolutely not. 1/ the frogs generally only pack one good game on tour. 2/ FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION. :p
It was a disgraceful All Black performance, equivalent to a poor super 14 side. Test losses at home apart from tri nations games should never occur.
Although there were injuries, this is no excuse,a “B” side should have knocked the frogs out.
Some of the blame must go to schoolteachers and the schooling policies as nearly every single boy is taught rugby at school and for players not to be coming through the system to to become top players shows a lack of insight by the schools and government.
Obviously Henry must now go and Todd Blackadder should be called up.
I disagree Muster Cullen, the ABs weren’t disgraced, just outmuscled by a very good Frog outfit. It’s not as though they were hammered or anything.
Gee, I wish Julia Gillard would adopt some of your government’s policies….compulsory rugby all round….bring it on!
chriscullen.
Not from Canterbury are you?
Coincidentally yes.
My joy at watching the AB’s lose was magnified 10 fold by listening to Nisbett & Smith squeeling like stuck pigs about the ref.
Highlights..
Great wrap-up Lance. Just watched the replay and was surprised by the naive rugby the AB’s played.
It was pretty clear they have not made the transition from Super 14 to the more physical Test arena.
I guess the score may have ended up close but in reality, the French were far superior in the key aspects of the game.
It is hard to see the AB’s being able to make many changes for the return match next week….apart from ditching Henry that is!!!!
Apart from the fact the best result of the weekend was Argentina beating England and their f*cking woeful defence (how long till England start tearing down their god Johnson?)… The All Black result was a close second.
An All Black defeat just reinforced the fact that the All Blacks are entering a two or three year stint of less depth and experience than usual. there was no game breaker. No magical Carter kick, Nonu was fully silenced, the wings might as well not have been there, Corey Jane has to be the worst back 3 All Black since Terry Wright – all those wingers to pick from and they pick him. I reckon I could go to a local club game in Auckland and find a better winger than him! The stinking French forwards were dominant in the front row and silenced the All-Black backrow. So to me, this was a French win, not an All-Black blip purely because of a lack of depth for the first time in a long time. (A little bell is ringing in the back of my head already about a famous upset at home in 2011! Very early I know)
It is going to be a tough season for the All blacks as they try to bring some players up to standard (welcome to the Wallabies woes over the last couple of years!).
Even with the return of the amazing, world saving, stupendous, miraculous, superb, ridiculously good looking Dan Carter and also that guy called McCaw it is going to take them some time to get back to speed.
The Wallabies have a massive opportunity this year and it starts with the French test in two weeks. A good chance to make a statement, a good chance to really test the set-piece (again!) and a good chance to show the Wallabies them selves that they can win all before them this year like some of the good years in the late 90’s, early 00’s. The return of who I believe is the best 6 in the world in Elsom will be a welcome boost as well. Hopefully his recovery will not be much longer though. Gits is also in world-beating form and is (at the moment) guiding the lads in total style.
It is great though that the Aus U20’s smashed the Welsh U20’s – some solid talent coming through! Now we will get a mini-Bledisloe semi final in Japan on the 17th!
Will be interesting to see the Boks form next weekend as well. I think they can take it 3-0 but in the process they might soften them up for us in the Tri-Nations.
Back on track though… I am really looking forward to a good Wallaby season. I haven’t felt this way about the Wallabies since ’99. At the same time though I worry that we are doing an All Black form lift between World Cups instead of at the right time. I hope not.
Thought Cory Jane played well compared to others. Rokocoko should get chopped before Jane.
I agree I thought the back three were almost the highlight, although Rockocko looked a bit lost. But Muliana was solid except for Trinh-Duc’s try!! and Cory Jane did all he could on more than one oscasion.
Does anyone know if the U20 is playing on foxsports? If so what time and channel? Thanks
Ed – the U20 telecasts from Japan have been very sporadic. I think about 4 games have been shown to date on Fox Sports, none of which involved the Young Wallabies. I’ve just checked the TV Guide for the next two weeks and it looks like that’s it….not even the Final!!!
I believe the semi’s and finals are to be telecast on FS, that’s what they said on The Rugby Club anyway..
They were right…FS TV Guide is now advertising the two U20 Semi-Finals.

Haha, kiwi’s lost the plot before they started the game…. a backrow all playing out of position, a 7 that is 6 ft a squillion and poor body height… reeked of Henry’s shit tactics again (think RWC 07). Should have been Latimer at 7, Messam at 6 – worked for the Chiefs all year!
Laughing all the way to the next Bledisloe… Aussie Robbie could pull off something special this year. Still surprised the NZRU stuffed that up, gifting him to the Wallabies…
Just had a thought, I expect we will beat these ABs, but I am really looking forward to seeing them try and play that airy-fairy breakdown style against the Jarpies!
