The NSW Waratahs kicked off their 2025 campaign with a commanding 73-5 victory over NSW Pasifica at Eric Tweedale Stadium in Granville, Sydney. The Tahs showcased their attacking prowess, running in eleven tries to one after establishing a 40-0 lead by halftime.
Head Coach Dan McKellar expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, noting the clinical execution in the opening stages. “There were some really good passages. I thought that in the first 20 minutes, we were really clinical,” McKellar said post-match. He acknowledged areas for improvement, particularly in maintaining ruthlessness throughout the game, but overall was pleased with the effort.
The match also provided valuable game time for squad members, including Eamon Doyle and Joey Fowler, who contributed off the bench after earlier appearances for the NSW Waratahs Under 20s. McKellar emphasised the importance of sharing the workload and plans to give more players opportunities in the upcoming trial against the ACT Brumbies in Bowral.
Despite the lopsided scoreline, McKellar identified areas needing attention, particularly the high number of turnovers. “Too many turnovers would be the main thing. If you turn the ball over seventeen times, you are not going to win too many Super Rugby games,” he remarked, attributing some issues to decision-making and early-season rust.
The Waratahs will look to build on this performance as they continue their pre-season preparations, aiming to fine-tune their game ahead of the Super Rugby Pacific season.
