2. The #7 dilemma
Fortunately we at Green and Gold Rugby are a bunch of good chaps, and we all think that we are more than capable to be coach the Wallabies, but we aren’t.
Deciding between Mr. Pockock and Mr. Hooper will be the greatest dilemma for Wallabies’ head coach Michael Cheika. The two are getting better and better by the day, and choosing which one of the two to put in the starting line-up will be a hell of a job.
I wish I had room to include Liam Gill, who had a magnificent game against the Rebels, but two is enough.
Captain Michael Hooper
Fortunately again, I’m from Victoria, and, despite the Rebels also having some good openside flanker options, I can relax and watch the northerners argue about who between the two is the best. But this question is and will remain near the top of our Tuesday Top Five topics for a while.
Rival David Pocock
What is certain is that both players are firing from all cylinders right now and this leads us to a further question: are the Wallabies giving enough rest to our top players?
Everyone who has played the Game Played in Heaven knows that there is nothing worse than being on the bench and watching his team mates play. Anyone who denies it is telling porky pies.
But, that has is maybe what they need to be doing, or watching from the stands. Surely Cheika can schedule some rest for the top Aussie players. The head coaches of the All Blacks and Springboks have demanded their Super Rugby franchises give the best players some time on the sidelines to ensure that they come to the most important event in world rugby fully charged.
Will these two champion #7s be burnt out by then?
Is Michael Cheika too shy to ask? I bet not. Is he a fool? I bet not, twice. What is he thinking? Who knows; maybe the Wallabies’ head coach thinks that a player needs to play and get dirty to feel alive: he was himself a back rower after all.
Alone on the top, Michael Cheika
Cheika himself may be overworked: being the Wallabies’ and Waratahs coach at the same time is an unprecedented hell of a job and we must respect him for the double hit he is copping, but maybe a little rest will help him to see things clearer. Turn things 100% over to Gibson now Cheik.
With four months to go it should be time to start thinking of RWC 2015. Maybe local supporters will be upset, but I’d trade a World Cup win for Super Rugby success every time!
