1. What’s with the Reds?
When you look at the forwards in the Reds squad you’d think any Australian Super Rugby franchise would be happy to have any one of them on their books. but put them together and there is definitely something missing. The departure of Scott Higginbotham and Radike Samo left a huge hole in the Reds pack and it’s never been filled.
The departure of Digby Ioane further exacerbated the problem. Ed Quirk and Jake Schatz are great rugby players. They make a tonne of tackles, win lineouts, cart the ball up and work their guts out every game, but they don’t make breaks and they don’t bend or break the line.
The Force have McCalman, the Rebels have Higginbotham, the Brumbies have Fardy and the Waratahs have too many to mention. Wouldn’t it be great if the Reds used that unused thirtieth squad spot on a 115kg 200cm line breaking back rower. I know, I know they don’t grow on trees. But what exactly are the Reds saving that spot for?
