NSW Waratahs’ seasoned backrower, Hugh Sinclair, is set to lead the team as captain in their upcoming trial match against NSW Pasifica this Saturday. With regular skipper Jake Gordon recently returning from Wallabies duties, Sinclair steps into the leadership role, donning the Number 8 jersey at Eric Tweedale Stadium in Granville, Sydney.
Sinclair emphasizes the significance of this trial as a platform for players to stake their claim for selection ahead of the Super Rugby Pacific 2025 season opener. He notes, “Everyone gets over running into each other for twelve or fourteen weeks.” The anticipation to face external opposition is palpable among the squad.
The day’s rugby festivities kick off with the NSW Waratahs Under 20s clashing with their NSW Pasifica counterparts at 1 pm, followed by the main event at 4 pm, and concluding with the NSW Waratahs Women taking on NSW Pasifica Women at 6 pm.
Head Coach Dan McKellar has assembled a 27-man squad for this initial trial, marking the first of two preparatory matches before the Waratahs commence their Super Rugby Pacific campaign on February 14, hosting the Highlanders at Allianz Stadium in Moore Park, Sydney.
Reflecting on the rigorous pre-season, Sinclair adds, “It’s been a long pre-season, and the boys are really excited to get out there and put into practice all the hard work we’ve done.” The trial presents a valuable opportunity for players to showcase their readiness and make a compelling case for inclusion in the Round 1 lineup.
As the Waratahs gear up for the season ahead, this trial match serves as a crucial stepping stone in their preparation, offering both seasoned players and newcomers a chance to impress the coaching staff and solidify their spots in the team.
