And he drove his enemies before him
And he drove his enemies before him

One of Australia’s first choice hookers and a favourite with NSW fans, Tatafu Polota-Nau, will pull on the light blue of Parramatta for the first time in nearly three years this Saturday when the Western Sydney side take on Randwick in the ABC game of the week.

Spectators at Manly Oval also look set for a treat, with the expected appearance of fellow NSW hard man, Wycliff Palu, set to make an impact from the Manly bench as he too bids to bag some bye-week game time.

Never short of passionate rugby fans, Coogee Oval will see Polota-Nau pull on a Two Blues jersey for the first time since July 2010 when he takes to the field at 3pm.

Now a veteran of 98 NSW and 44 Test matches, Polota-Nau has been sidelined for two weeks and will use the Shute Shield to regain some match fitness as he vies for selection for the HSBC Waratahs’ big home clash against the Chiefs next Friday.

Pleased to be returning to the club where he says it all began, the popular hooker said ‘I still remember when I got the call up into firsts Colts in my first year playing for Parra, but little did I know that the next year I would be lucky enough to be selected in the first grade side.’

Although he has since moved closer to the HSBC Waratahs’ Moore Park base, Taf insists on visiting his club team once a month for board meetings and, he says, ‘to keep a keen eye on the team that brought me to where I am now.’

‘I am definitely excited to see what Parra have to offer this year. There has been a lot of talk about them in the trials and it’s good to see them bounce back from a rough period last year.’

Randwick, however, won’t be an easy opposition.  Hungry after last week’s disappointing last-minute loss to Wests, the Galloping Greens are hunting for a second round win, with star back-rower and captain Seilala Lam and hooker Nio Halangahu looking fit and ready to serve up some ruthless defence against the hard-running Parramatta forwards.

Relishing his return to club rugby, Polota-Nau says one of the greatest qualities of Shute Shield rugby is the ability to play some top level footy and enjoy every second of it. ‘Each week, 15 good mates take the field in a test of mental and physical endurance; it’s one of the aspects I respect so much about the sport and this competition.’

Round two kicks off on Friday night at North Sydney Oval as Norths take on Warringah.  On Saturday afternoon, Penrith host Gordon at Nepean Rugby Park, Souths take on Easts at Forshaw, Uni welcome Eastwood and Manly pit themselves against the Pirates at Manly Oval.

Round two will definitely bring a mixture of passion, aggression, talent and stamina as Eastwood, Randwick, Parramatta, Easts, Gordon and Penrith all take the field eager for a victory to get them on the board.

‘One of the unique things about this competition is the ability to shake hands and enjoy a drink after the game, you don’t see it in many sports but it’s one of the main reasons we love coming back to it,’ said Polota-Nau.

The 2013 competition will be broadcast live on ABC1 throughout NSW and the ACT on Saturdays from 3pm. Interstate viewers can watch a full replay of each week’s Shute Shield game at 3.30am on Tuesday mornings on ABC1 nationally and rugby fans everywhere can catch all the action online at anytime on ABC iView.
