The Highlanders have appointed Timoci Tavatavanawai and Hugh Renton as co-captains for the 2025 DHL Super Rugby Pacific season.
Tavatavanawai, a Fijian-born winger known for his explosive power and ability to break tackles, joined the Highlanders in 2024 after two seasons with Moana Pasifika. His dynamic presence on the field has made him a key figure in the team’s backline.
Renton, a seasoned loose forward with the Highlanders since 2021, brings experience, work ethic, and tactical awareness to the captaincy role. Known for his drive and hard-hitting defense, Renton’s leadership will be integral to the team’s performance.
Head Coach Jamie Joseph expressed confidence in the duo, stating, “Jim (Timoci) and Hugh embody the qualities we are looking for in our leaders – passion, commitment, and the ability to inspire others with their actions or words.” He added that their combined strengths would complement each other well throughout the season.
Both Tavatavanawai and Renton expressed their honor and excitement at being named co-captains, emphasizing their commitment to the team’s growth and success.
The Highlanders will kick off their 2025 campaign under this new leadership duo, aiming to build on last season and push for success in the competitive Super Rugby Pacific landscape.
