Here’s some footage of the elusive break which Matt Giteau made through the Crusaders defense which sparked the Force revival last weekend.
Surprisingly the commentators and panel shows failed to pick up the 3 metres that this ball travelled forward.
It’s particularly easy to see at Jade stadium due to the grass patterns that run parallel to the try lines.

I think they let it stand because he could have scored it himself, but just felt like throwing a long pass to complete his creative interpretation…
It was as bacwards as Morty’s effort against the all ablacks. I thought this was more forward at the time.
If you’re running forward at the time of passing the ball can go flat or a bit forwards, as long as it’s backwards relative to your movement. I don’t know if this is strictly a rule, but it’s a common interpretation.

there was nothing wrong with that pass. The ball didn’t travel forward relative to the movement of the passiong player.
The lines on the field are irrelevant.
