As we watched the Wallabies lose the kicking battles through the Lions series, more than a few of us got misty eyed thinking back to the day when Latho’s booming spiral punts used to take us from our 22 to the opposition’s.
Like the scrum and lineout, the torpedo was one of those skills peculiar to rugby and fell to a line of thinking from AFL and League that its risk outweighed its reward. With better skill execution, could it make a comeback?
See the video below from kicking coach Stuart Lierich (@kickcoaching) as he goes through the finer points of the spiral punt.
What do you reckon – is there a place back in rugby for the spiral punt? Do you or players you coach use it?
