“Brisbane likely to cop a month’s worth of rainfall in two days, with a major wet weather event set to drench the South-East. Forecasters say 40mm to 60mm of rain will hit Brisbane over the weekend. However falls could be as high as 100mm.”
“On Saturday, there is the chance of a thunderstorm in Brisbane. A top of 18°C is forecast with winds becoming east to north-easterly 15 to 25km/h during the morning.”
In the lead up to this weekends fixtures you could be forgiven for assuming the apocalypse was just around the corner. Players were advised to pack their snorkelling gear, and the weather dictated that power rugby was the order of the day. With rain being the great leveller in Sport, anything could happen. Though the bulk of the rainfall predicted was to come Saturday night, it was a day where teams with suspect commitment and defence in tight would be found out and exploited – no result can ever be considered assured in the wet, and sure enough this weekends results were anything but.
Will Rafter (RuggasXV) grabbed a seat at the Green and Gold Rugby Match of the Round on Oaklands parade as two the undefeated Nudgee and Churchie First XVs met to potentially decide the premiership. The game sat on a knife edge for the bulk of the fixture, but Churchie proved too strong in the end as Nudgee’s defence, courtesy of two yellow cards, was broken down in the second. Churchie came out trumps 26-9 at full-time.
Dark Shark sat through one of the rounds great upsets at Tennyson Stadium with the Red and Black of Gregory Terrace playing host to the Centurions of Ipswich Grammar. The wet conditions favoured an IGS forward pack that was desperate for such an opportunity to impose their will on an unsuspecting city outfit, and they weren’t let down. Ipswich wrapped up the match with a commanding scoreline of 39 to 26.
I (TheKing) was stuck standing out in the rain for Toowoomba Grammar‘s tour to Brisbane Grammar‘s home field at Northgate, and despite a painfully close first half, Toowoomba were able to prove their class by scoring 4 tries in the 15 minute period after halftime, well and truly sinking Brisbane Grammar’s potential first win of the season and putting the home side square in the sights for a second consecutive Wooden Spoon. The third quarter barrage went largely unanswered as Toowoomba closed out the game 41 to 19.
I was also lucky enough to get a peek at BSHS‘s trip to BBC for another of the rounds big upsets as a fledgling Brisbane State High First XV ground a heavily favoured BBC outfit out of the game in conditions not often seen on the usually pristine ovals of Miskin St. Though a low scoring affair, the game was absolutely gripping from beginning to end – BSHS ended up winning 12-5 after the game was tied at 5 apiece at oranges.
