3. Mitch Inman – Wallaby contender?
It’s great to see the Melbourne Rebels playing so well. They must have been heart broken to come so close to beating the Highlanders on Friday. But the improvement in the team is easy for anyone to see. It’s amazing what importing a Queenslander will do for your side. I’m joking!
One of the biggest improvements has been in Mitch Inmans game. He’s moved in one place to inside centre and the difference has been dramatic. But it can’t be just put down to the positional change. He now passes. He has a step. He’s scoring tries. And that’s something he struggled with for his first couple of seasons of Super rugby.
Has his game improved enough to bring him into contention for a wallabies spot? Remember Matt Toomua is the incumbent and he’s a pretty handy player. But Mitch is the first genuine big centre that Australia has produced since Stirling Mortlock hung up his boots. Beale, Godwin,Harris and Toomua are all light weights compared to him. I should also note that none of these guys are in bad form. Perhaps what may work against him is a change in style needed to accommodate him especially if Ashley-Cooper is the other centre?
