11:24
Juan Cote: Evening all – it’s all down to the Reds now.
so far everyone has survived the warm-up!!! |
11:25
Juan Cote: The QRU has opened the purse strings and the press hacks are chowing down on seafood platters |
11:38
Juan Cote: Home crowd out-numbered by Canes supporters |
11:39
Juan Cote: Horwill leads out the Reds – he’s playing his 50th match tonight |
11:39
Juan Cote: Reds to kick off |
11:41
Juan Cote: Bright start to the game with both teams trading kicks Reds l/o on the Canes 40 |
11:42
Juan Cote: First scrum – Reds attack |
11:43
Juan Cote: T/o Canes and they attack going thru the hands Smith makes a half break – swing it back left to the other wing but a knock on kills it.
Reds scrum 35 out |
11:45
Juan Cote: Reds make a break but t/o and Nonu opens up in mid-field.
Nonu chips thru and Va’aulu grounds it, maybe his doesn’t as it goes to the TMO after theEllison dived on the ball |
11:46
[Comment From Jatz] Working yet? |
11:46
Juan Cote: No Try, the fuck for that!!!
Va’aulu is lucky |
11:46
[Comment From Epi] Hello all… |
11:46
[Comment From cyclopath] Am I being edited out or sumfing? Tried about 6 comments?? |
11:46
Juan Cote: 5 min Canes back on attack -they are looking great.
Inside te Reds 10 min and they have advantage |
11:47
Gagger: Nonu goes over for a try |
11:47
[Comment From Jatz] Reds are going to get hammered here. |
11:47
Juan Cote: 6 min TRY Nonu. Too much pressure |
11:47
cyclopath: That looked a bit easy |
11:48
[Comment From cyclopath] I am trying to pitch in JC but my comments are disappearing in the ether |
11:48
Juan Cote: The Canes are all over the Reds, they are running from depth and at pace. This could be a long night |
11:48
[Comment From cyclopath] Is Kaplan rat poison for the Reds as much as for the Tahs? |
11:48
[Comment From chriscullen] i note no one has voted for quade cooper for the wallabies yet |
11:48
[Comment From chriscullen] cmon reds |
11:48
[Comment From cyclopath] Carn the Reds! |
11:48
[Comment From cyclopath] The wanging on will be ill-tempered after the f***in Blues let the Crusaders live again! |
11:48
Juan Cote: Ripia kicks the conversion |
11:48
Jatz: Maybe the Reds should save money from seafood platters for players next season. |
11:48
cyclopath: Ignore all my out of sequence posts from about 10 minutes ago!! |
11:49
Gagger: Sorry fellas – just got back to it
But cyclo – they were such gold! |
11:49
cyclopath: Yeah, yeah – at the time, but fame is so fleeting… |
11:50
Juan Cote: Canes put up a high ball but player sin front of kicker. Reds take a scrum option on the Canes 35 mt line.
Short arm from the scrum and Schwalger gets a talking too |
11:50
Juan Cote: 8 min another scrum in the same spot |
11:50
cyclopath: Kaplan got his warnings out the way before they kicked off – very efficient! |
11:50
Jatz: I cant believe two people have picked Tahu in their wallaby squad. |
11:50
Jatz: And Beale! |
11:51
cyclopath: Dunno about Kurtley, but Tahu is versatile and could be a game breaker. Yes, I did pick him!! |
11:51
[Comment From Guest] go the canes :P |
11:51
Epi: I’ve got Tahu in my squad too.. |
11:51
Jatz: He turns over more ball than anyone in the history of the game! |
11:51
Epi: have you watched the last three tahs games? |
11:52
Juan Cote: 10 miun Canes doing as they please and make a mess of the Reds TRY |
11:52
Jatz: Yes… did you watch him? Nearly every time he touches the ball the Tahs lose it! |
11:52
cyclopath: Fuck off Piri with the stupid dance! |
11:52
Jatz: Misses tackles too. |
11:52
Jatz: e is shite! |
11:53
Epi: per minute played Tahu has probably made more line breaks this year than anyone in the comp. If Deans can teach him a few pointers he will be a great centre. |
11:53
Jatz: Rubbish. |
11:53
Epi: doesnt matter anyway – he will be in the squad. |
11:53
cyclopath: What Epi said |
11:53
Juan Cote: The Canes have a try any time they like once the go wide, both Va’aulu and Davies cannot tackle.
Conversion missed |
11:54
cyclopath: Has Davies got Peter Grigg’s beard on? |
11:54
Juan Cote: 12 min Lucas has a snipe down the short side and makes ground but Davies drops a difficult pass |
11:55
Jatz: He will probably be in the squad now Digby is injured. |
11:55
[Comment From Blue] Rugby players that dance after scoring should be bitch slapped. Good evening ladies. |
11:55
cyclopath: Exactly Jatz, Ioane was my preferred option too, but no more. You need a player like that. |
11:55
Epi: agreed Blue |
11:55
Blue: Reds. Tackel |
11:56
cyclopath: Well the Canes should have access to handbags |
11:56
Blue: Tackle |
11:56
Juan Cote: 13 min Mungo opens them up in mid-field but the Reds shoot themselves in the foot again.
cooper throws a pass to the invisible man |
11:56
Blue: Just checking if its possible to ahve those two words in once sentence |
11:56
Blue: apparently is :) |
11:56
cyclopath: Blue, only if the word “can’t” also appears |
11:57
Juan Cote: 15 min Canes t/o and they attack thru the forwards – dominating everything |
11:57
Blue: I don’t know |
11:57
Blue: I look at this Reds side |
11:57
Juan Cote: Breaks down and Reds havae a scrum |
11:57
Blue: and its really not a bad side |
11:58
Blue: they just seem to pile on the mistakes |
11:58
cyclopath: So Blue, who do you want your Big Bad Biltong Biting Blue Bastards to play in the semis? |
11:58
Blue: why can they turn out like they did against the Sharks |
11:58
Juan Cote: Reds l/o on canes 45 |
11:58
Blue: and then dish up shit the rest of the time |
11:58

11:58
Blue: Canes |
11:58
Blue: I mean |
11:58
Blue: Crusaders |
11:58
Blue: Have to travel |
11:59
Blue: Donlt threaten that much in attack |
11:59
Blue: Not a partucularly great pack |
11:59
Juan Cote: Reds make some progress and have a mid-field scrum 40 out |
11:59
Blue: but |
11:59
Blue: nybody |
11:59
Blue: s long as its at home in PRetoria |
12:00
Blue: anybody |
12:00
Juan Cote: 18 min Reds have 13 missed tackles already |
12:00
Juan Cote: Get a penalty from a lineout infringement and kick to the corner for another l/o |
12:01
cyclopath: Geez, Hore, how stupid are you? |
12:01
Juan Cote: Reds win the lineout and get another penalty only 10 out now |
12:01
Jatz: No shots at penalty already! |
12:01
Blue: At this rate I know it won’t be the Tahs against the Bulls |
12:01
Blue: hich was a worry |
12:02
cyclopath: I reckon the Tahs could have out-bored the Bulls, or anyone really. Their lack of style is made for finals |
12:03
Juan Cote: TRY Nonu |
12:03
Jatz: Tahs are gone! |
12:03
Epi:
Can someone tell me why you need two halfbacks in a squad? Why can’t burgess play a full game and if he gets injured Gits goes in.. I think its a waste of a pick. |
12:04
cyclopath: Tahs were gone when the Blues farked it up. Sorry, but the Reds were never in it. |
12:04
Jatz: Yeah, agree cycle |
12:04
Jatz: cyclo |
12:04
Juan Cote: Once again the inside defence of the Reds is exposed The Canes have too much power.
At least the Tahs have been put out of their misery early |
12:04
Juan Cote: Missed conversion 17 – 0 |
12:05
Jatz: The crusaders smash the tahs hopes again! |
12:05
cyclopath: Cycle, cyclo – no matter Promise I won’t call you Ritz! |
12:05
Epi: BTW Gagger.. why is Berrick Barnes listed twice? |
12:05
cyclopath: He’s that good |
12:05
Juan Cote: 23 mins Reds trying to mount some sort of attack but easily containted |
12:06

12:06
Juan Cote: Canes scrum on thier ouwn 40 |
12:07
Juan Cote: Rodney Davies almost made a tackle!!! |
12:07
Juan Cote: Canes get short arm and then the Ref marches the Reds 10. Canes scrum on half way |
12:09
cyclopath: Was that Va’alu with the bone-cruncher? |
12:09
Juan Cote: TRY Reds |
12:10
cyclopath: Go Quuuuaaadddeee!! |
12:11
Juan Cote: After a massive tackle by Fetoai on Ellison the Reds have thier best period of attack finished by Quade doing some sort of funny dance thing wide out |
12:11
Jatz: 1. Alexander, 2. Moore, 3. Baxter, 4. Horwill, 5. Sharpe, 6. Mumm, 7. Smith, 8. Elsom, 9. Burgess, 10. Giteau, 11. Tuqiri, 12. O’Connor, 13. Mortlock, 14. Turner, 15. Mitchell |

12:12
Gagger: Buns error fixed |
12:13
Juan Cote: The Reds attack again but turnover the ball. The Canes return it and the Reds have a lineout on their 22 |
12:13
Juan Cote: 31 min Canes on attack and have a scrum 35 out from Reds line |
12:14
Gagger: Mungo McLInden playing himself into the squad? |

12:16
chriscullen: waratahs will be disgusted |
12:16
Juan Cote: Conversion kicked |
12:16
cyclopath: But is this the hit-out the Canes need before the finals? Pretty loose stuff. I think the Tahs are already onto Mad Monday…or should be. |
12:17
Gagger: Reds missed 17 tackles already. Impressive going |
12:18
Jatz: Tahs were gone since the loss to the bulls and force |
12:18
Juan Cote: Worst thing is there are three, fucking THREE kiwis in the press box |
12:18
Jatz: JC, at least Sean Fitzpatrick isnt there! |
12:18
Juan Cote: 35 min Reds penalty 40 out from Canes line. They kick to the corner for a lineout |
12:19
cyclopath: Fitzy’s been disowned by the Kiwis |
12:20
Gagger: Cheeky little bugger |
12:20
Juan Cote: Red s bashing in close on metres short. Lucas dives in under the ruck and may have scored ????? Gong to the TMO |
12:20
Jatz: video will find it tough to see that. |
12:20
Gagger: No way we’ll see that. Need the TMO from Auckland |
12:21
Gagger: Gawn. Givvit |
12:21

12:21
cyclopath: Just give it, and let’s get on with the Red comeback |
12:22
Juan Cote: Charity begins at home!!! |
12:22
Gagger: That’s hilarious |
12:22
cyclopath: Is that Kaplan saying “You’re useless, thanks”? |
12:22
Jatz: I’m sure the TMO is happy with the way he is being treated by Kaplan tonight! |
12:22
Gagger: S14 refereeing & TMO is a complete joke |
12:22
Epi:
Does anyone think Kaplan might just be a bit of a prick? |
12:22
Jatz: Yes Epi… He is |
12:22
cyclopath: Define ” a bit”. |
12:23
Gagger: That’s not the word to use. Use the female version |
12:23
Juan Cote: Maybe Kaplan has been out the Steve Walsh before the game? Barnes kick the conversion from wide out HERE THEY COME…again |

12:25
cyclopath: C’mon, another try, 24-21 and the Tahs have to put their beers down. |
12:25
Jatz: Conrad Smith must be the luckiest player in the world getting all the space Nonu makes for him! |
12:25
Juan Cote: Barnes puts the ball into touch and that’s halftime |
12:26
Gagger: What? The Reds HAVE to give a try away before half time. Its the law isn’t it? |
12:31
Epi: Weepu should be left out of the all blacks for that dance. |
12:32
cyclopath: But he would look slimmer in black – that grey does nothing for him. |
12:32

12:32
[Comment From chriscullen] wonder if robbie deans has voted yet |
12:32
Juan Cote: The Reds are getting dominated and don’t deserve to only be 10 points behind the Canes.
The Canes will need to keep the pressure on as the Reds are hanging around. Everytime the Canes go wide they make breaks. The Reds have too many non-tacklers iwth both of their winger and Quade being shaky. The Reds have made quite a few breaks close to the ruck and this is an aspect the Canes need to fix or they will get cut to shredds against better teams. The Reds need to drag Davies as he looks to timid to make the grade. Leroy is battling manfully as is Barnes and Fetoai. Andrew Shaw is playing a lone hand against the Canes backrow. The Canes lost their way in the last 15 mins of that half as everything was becoming a bit too easy and they got away from doing the hard work at the breakdown and lost their structure. The Canes set piece is a bit dodgy, the lineout isn’t the best and their scrum has been pinged a few times from packing incorrectly |
12:32
[Comment From chriscullen] weepu wont make it. cowan will |
12:32
Gagger: Cheap entertainment CC |
12:34
Epi:
mclinden is about the only shining star for the reds. wonder how he would go in a decent team? |
12:35
cyclopath: He’s looked better and better all season. Has done his chances for higher honours no harm |
12:35
Juan Cote: Away for the second half |
12:37
Juan Cote: Canes on attack inside the Reds 22 |
12:37
Juan Cote: TRY Canes |
12:37
Jatz: Well… what a crap start |
12:37
cyclopath: Is this the first half again? Same soft opening try |
12:37
Jatz: There were huge gaps in the mid-field from very early on |
12:38
Juan Cote: Had to happen, they started the 2 nd half the way they started to the first and the attractively named Jemery Thrush goes over |
12:38
Jatz: I bet the birds are lining up to marry him |
12:38
Juan Cote: Conversion kicked |
12:39
Juan Cote: Once again the Reds defence is shithouse. It started from an inside break from Nonu and the Reds never recovered |
12:39
Gagger: Do you think the reds practice “tackling”? |
12:40
Juan Cote: 44 mi n Reds have it and tring to launch something |
12:40

12:46
Juan Cote: Reds streaching the Canes and they give away another penalty.
Canes might lose a player if there is antohter infringment |
12:47
Gagger: Such explosive pace from Leroy |
12:47
Gagger: Never seen a guy hit the ground quicker |
12:47
cyclopath: But he already warned the Canes about that in the 1st half? Does the warning clock reset? |
12:47
Epi: Leroy reminds me of Asafa Powell |
12:47
Jatz: The Reds remind me of Ulster… No game breakers, poor defence, no answers offered and nothing looking amazing for next season. |
12:47
Juan Cote: reds l/o 5 out.
Ant Sauer coming on Rodney Davies…finally |
12:48
Juan Cote: Reds win lo and are bashjing in close. Canes turn it over but throw it over the head of the kicker |

12:59
Epi:

12:59
Juan Cote: 59 min Reds give away a scrum penalty and the Canes go for a penalty kick from 45 out – not attacking which is strange |
12:59
Jatz: Ah… thats because there were two of him! |
12:59
Juan Cote: Penalty goal kicked |
1:00
Jatz: 118%… not bad at all from Barnes |

Jatz: yeah… no substitute for speed. |
1:11
Juan Cote: Mungo off and A Faingaa on |
1:11
cyclopath: We have lacked a real flier for a while. And talking of fliers, he’s the Finger! |
1:11
Epi: if you got a tuqiri or diggers on one wing you need a speedster on the other. |
1:11
Juan Cote: 68 min Reds scrum on their own 20 |
1:12
cyclopath: Diggers is much quicker than Toonkiri |
1:12
Gagger: Who’s the toddler at 9? |
1:12
Jatz: Tuqiri hasn’t set the world on fire for a long time now. |
1:12
Juan Cote: Reds clear downfield and Canes l/o on Reds 40 |
1:12
Epi:
agreed. he just doesnt seem to be that hard to tackle at the moment. |
1:12
Epi: other parts of his game are better than ever.. |
1:13
Juan Cote: Ca nes controlling the ball and atacking on Reds 22 |
1:13
cyclopath: Hardman’s off!! Alas, called back. |
1:13
Jatz: Hardman just looks beaten and dead tired. |
1:14
cyclopath: And another Finger comes on |
1:14
Juan Cote: S Faingaa on and Hardy off, Hardman has played a great game tonight |
1:14
Juan Cote: Tialata limping off |
1:15
Jatz: Every player on the reds bench has ice on their knees… whats going on? |
1:15
Juan Cote: 72 min TRY Reds |
1:16
Juan Cote: Va’aulu gets and intercept and goes 60mtr under the sticks |

1:18
Juan Cote: Schwalger goes for a snipe from a ruck but puts his foot out |
1:18
Gagger: How did Va’alu hold on to that? |
1:18
[Comment From Captain Hurricane] Darn it! |
1:19
Juan Cote: 4 mins to go and the Canes are under pressure |
1:20
Juan Cote: Reds still 60 mtr away from Canes line |
1:20
Juan Cote: Reds knock on and the Canes are home |
1:22
Captain Hurricane: Hurricanes! Hurricanes! Hurricanes! |
1:22
cyclopath: Hello Captain. |
1:22
Captain Hurricane: Hello! Is it over yet? argh |
1:23
Juan Cote: Reds have one last attack of the season after great work from Higgers but Big Kev turns over the ball and the Canes clear |
1:24
Juan Cote: Reds having one last huurahh |
1:25
Juan Cote: Working it in close but inside the Canes 22 |
1:25
Juan Cote: Barnes thryu |
1:26
Juan Cote: Reds turnover and its curtains |
1:28
Juan Cote: The Canes looked great at the start but faded out of it toward the end, not sure what is going on but they looked tired and the Reds had the best of the last quarter but could do anything with the possession.
any questions for Nonu? |
1:29
Juan Cote: The Reds tried hard but once again the physical dominance of the oppostion showed. The Reds need size for next year to be any chance of a winning team |
1:29
Epi:
Max Factor or Loreal? |
1:29
cyclopath: Great dig from the Reds. Well done, and all the more pity about the soft tries they let in at the opening of each half. Oh well, another Super season done for Aussie teams. Canes and Chiefs will not be looking forward to facing either the Saders or Bulls in the final if that’s how it pans out, I wouldn’t think. |
1:30
Juan Cote: Be fucked if Im asking him that Epi!!!!! |
1:30
[Comment From KiwiAsBro] Good to see the Aussies make the final this year |
1:30
Epi: hehe.. |
1:30
cyclopath: Yeah JC. Ma’a, whose mo is more pool-cleaner, yours or Corey’s? |
1:31
cyclopath: Thanks for the analysis, KAB. |
1:31
Captain Hurricane: It was close though on the aussie teams |
1:32
Juan Cote: The Canes have a few concerns, most notably their scrum which was set to a couple of times tonight by a Reds pack which is hardly top shelf. Also the Canes fade in and out of the game, not sure why but they don’t seeem to be able to keep up consistent pressure |
1:32
Captain Hurricane: Canes get another likely crack at cheifs! |
1:33
Captain Hurricane: Night, Happy now. thanks for the commentary |
1:33
cyclopath: Tough one to call, Capatin. Both teams had some issues with their wins this week. Prior to this week I’d have picked the Canes to beat them – dunno now. It will be a cracker. |
1:35
Epi:
anyone watching the Force? |
1:35
Captain Hurricane: advantage to chiefs i think with awesome home crowd – cow bells and chainsaw possum intimidating kickers at goal time. Will be the diff can’t handle pressure. Grey strip won’t help either. |
1:37
cyclopath: I’m watching the Force – at least the first half I’d say. |
1:38
Juan Cote: Going down to the press conference now |
1:46
Epi: Try Ryan Cross after 40 secs |
1:46
Epi: grubber from Gits dived on by cross. |

Not looking good for the Tahs!
Go the Canes!
In answer to the mo question from cyclopath, apparently there is big money on the mo-comp. Nonu didn’t come down for the interviews but So’oialo gave us the drum. Rodney was bemoning the fact he didn’t start growing his until after the other blokes – he looks to me like he could grow a full beard in an afternoon so I wouldn’t rule him out at this stage.
Nonu is the raging favourite to take out the cash which will be decided when the Canes play their last game. I wouldn’t rule out coach Colin Cooper either, he looks to be working up a decent gotee that will be able to fashioned into a smokin’ drop mo when the time is right – he may lose points as it there is a fair bit of salt’n’pepper in it however.
Never let it be said that Cote isn’t afraid to ask the BIG questions
Well done JC – holding up the G&GR journalistic standards!
