Canada gets one back and defeats Australia in Amsterdam
Last week the fighting Australia seven’s women team came from behind against Canada in London, today the Wallaroos got a taste of their own medicine by the Canadians in another game to remember.
Canada struck first blood after five minutes with a try from speedster Paquin, but Aussies’ skipper Williams was quick and powerful to beat the Canadian defence and equalise the score minutes after. With Dalton’s conversion Australia went in the lead. But the North Americans ended the first half ahead with a try of last year’s women world cup MVP, Harvey.

The second half started with a magician trick from Tonegato, who step-toed over the chalk. But once again the lead changed again, thanks to Paquin’s second try of the match to Canada.
Tonegato starred again with three minutes to play covering almost the entire pitch to score an incredible try and Australia lead by two points.
Green from Australia was twice instrumental for Canada’s comeback. She will learn from her mistakes but first, she conceded a silly penalty in the opponent’s 22 for not releasing after being tackled, and next, lost a ball forward with 90 seconds remaining which sparked Landry’s try for the girls in red.
Mind you it was brilliant run for the try.
Qantas Australian Women’s Sevens Head Coach Tim Walsh said:
The last couple of weeks have been a roller coaster of emotions. The highs of winning in London and qualifying for the Olympics but then losing the Final like that stings.
The girls are so disappointed, but we will learn from that. We’ve won in quite a few different ways this weekend in Amsterdam and adapted so well. The competition is so fierce now that you need to plan for every eventuality – dry weather, wet weather, opposition style, and so on.
Sharni Williams has been spectacular for us in the last few weeks while Emma Tonegato is simply a world-class player who proved that again in Amsterdam. There were some really good positives. To try and go back-to-back is very tough and we so nearly achieved it.
Canada scored its first Cup win of their Sevens’ history and came second overall in this years’ tournament. New Zealand was first and the Aussies third.
England won the third place contest against the USA in another thriller and qualify directly to Rio thanks to a better point difference than the US.
