Q. Mate, what have the British and Irish Lions been doing in South Africa lately?
A. Ummm, playing five games of rugby (six as of tonight), maintaining match fitness, busting their gut trying to get selected for the test side and generally working up combinations?
Q. Great. What have the Springboks been up to?
A. Bugger all!
And in a nutshell, that could be the difference between winning and losing in Durbs this Saturday. Apart from a pissant game against Namibia, the equivalent of playing the Kenmore Bears U12s – yeah, I’ve never heard of them either……they’ve only been trudging around the training park with the ‘pretender’, Peter De Villiers yelling at them or at the media. That’s all well and good but by not organising a decent buildup to their international season, I think they’ve left the door a tad ajar for the Brits and Irish to do a Froggie on the Bokkies. If anything, this first test has the Springboks at their most vulnerable.
Sure the Bulls contingent played in the Super 14 Final, what, three weeks ago now? But what about the rest? Their last game of rugby was the final Super 14 round on 15/16 May; remembering that none of the other Saffa franchises were in the semi’s. That’s a fair break considering the nature of their opposition – just ask the All Blacks…
The other advantage that the Lions have is again, similar to Le Francais (no, not a steady supply of vin rouge), they’ve been playing European rugby with all the consequent advantages at the moment. That includes the benefit of the ‘old rules’ that allows more physical confontation at ruck time, where the ball remains on the deck a lot longer than the five second clearance or else its ‘unplayable, free kick’ turnover shit. You’d of detected that I’m not a fan of the latter. And lets not forget the Brits love of a good maul. Like the ABs, the Bokkies better adapt from the Super 14 super quick.
It sems that it’s everybody’s opinion in the Southern Hemisphere that the test series is ‘all over red rover’ before a ball has even been bowled. Having watched the five Brit Lions fixtures played to date, I’d beg to differ. Sure, there were no Bokkies in the provincial sides, apart from Deon Carstens, but some of those teams offered substantial resistance and I think the Lions have been travelling pretty well. The interesting thing about it is that, until today, there hasn’t really been a Saturday and a Wednesday side. It’s pretty much been mix and match without obvious dirt trackers.
That’s now changed. The team that’s been selected for the Southern Kings looks like a dirt tracker selection, although the dirty dirties in this match like Croft, Monye and Wallace in my view have probably deserved a guernsey in the test 22. I think the front rankers Vickery, Mears and probably Jenkins pick themselves. Mears is without doubt, the only decent hooker they’ve got and Vickers is just the sort of hard bastard you need against the Boers. Sheridan….well, isn’t he just the greatest thing since sliced bread, according to the pommy media, but over recent times has failed to deliver. Crikey, even Le Fuse short-circuited him as the seminal moment of the Wallaby v England test last year.
Captain O’Connell is obviously a dead cert in the second row, with Shaw and O’Callghan really not in the mix. I thought Hines would be the man as not only is he a good lineout option but can be a bit on the abrasive side, as you’d expect of a country boy from Wagga. But at this stage it could be Alun Wyn Jones, who plays a similar style of footy to O’Connell, and probably deserves the first go. Geech says he prefers a traditional No 7, which is jock speak for Martyn Williams, and I’d pick Heaslip as 8th man and probably round it off with Wallace.
Mike Philips is having a terrific tour and very much reminds me of Farr-Jones, but probably with an extra leg. His boyo mate Stephen Jones is experienced, takes the ball to line and on his day has an effective kicking game. These two look the goods so far as the half pairing, with Ellis and RO’G/Captain Hook as the backup.
Jamie Roberts has been outstanding at inside centre, which means Ricki Flutey doesn’t get a look in. He’s just back from injury any case. BO’D – say no more. I liked the banner at the Stormers game that said ‘Umaga – you can’t get me here’.
It’s a no-brainer for Lee Byrne at fullback, although Rob Kearney had an impressive game last weekend. Tommy Bowe picks himself – tall, rangy and evasive, and Ugo Monye to finish it off. Sad to see Shane Williams not reaching anywhere near his Six Nations form of the past couple of years. I think he’s jaded and in desperate need of a break (or a bex and a good lie down).
That’s my team anyway (helped by the mail from the Southern Kings selection). With the expected gaelic flavour of the test team, at least they’ll have a bit of passion. I’ll stick my neck out (and some would say that as an old hooker I don’t have one) and predict a Lions victory. From what I’ve seen of them so far, I think they might have an advantage.

Nice Article.
I also think the Boks believe they only have to show up and collect the trophy, so I agree they will be in for an ambush.
Should be a cracker either way, shaping up to be a pretty good weekend of Rugby.

i’m writing them off now.
on the proviso that the springboks are not.
I think it’s gearing up to be an awesome series… You also need to remember that the Lions will not have played as a 15 either.
Also, the Boks coaches have had a lot of match time to look at weaknesses and patterns where as the Lions have no idea what to expect from the Boks.
The teams the Lions have been playing have also been absolute crap!
I still think the Boks will be to good. They have too many players in great form and to be honest the home advantage tips it for me.
Sounds like a soft call but their is a reason why the last two tests are at altitude!
The Lions team doesn’t have the depth I think it was expecting. Mad Munster O’Connell for example has been in awful form this tour not even getting close to his Heineken Cup form. Shane Williams is another. There have also been a few players who never got a start through injury who would have added experience. ie Shanklin and Ferris.
I think the test team will look something like this:
1. Gethin Jenkins, 2. Lee Mears, 3. Phil Vickery, 4. Alun Wyn Jones, 5. POC (c), 6. ?, 7. Martyn Williams, 8. ?, 9. Mike Phillips, 10. Stephen Jones, 11. Ugo Monye, 12. Jamie Roberts, 13. BOD, 14. Tommy Bowe, 15. Lee Byrne
With players in form then this is a solid team which will give it a good crack but as soon as one drops they will be in trouble. If BOD goes down with his suspect shoulder what then? Same with Roberts. Not much depth at 9 either.
So the first test will be the closest I think. After that I think we are looking at either 2-1 Boks or 3-0 Boks.
With players like Burger, Speis, Habana, Matfield, du Preez and Steyn all in good form I don’t see any other result.
Lets hope we get a good ref for both sides to have a good crack!!
Ref for the first test is Bryce Lawrence, 2nd is Christophe Birdos (France – never heard of him) and our Dicko for No. 3.
I too am writing them off. I simply can’t believe that the South African pack of all people will be overwhelmed by mauling and being allowed to kill the ball.
I can believe that the South Africans will outpoint them nearly all over the park.
I will still watch eagerly, though.
How bad a ref is Nigel Owens! Terrible game. He couldn’t ref a ruck if his boyfriend was in it.
Lions were poor again. One try from a kick that was knocked on (for god sake, even that dildo Stuart Barnes said it was a knock on before it was awarded!) and another penalty try thanks to Nigel along with many other mysterious calls… He might have been a little excited being on the same field as Andy Powell.
Considering the Kings had a week together, were given two yellow cards and managed to score the only running try of the game, the staff couldn’t be happy with that.
Two players may have pressed there selection in Shaw and O’Gara who had nice games. Other than that, except for the Lions scrum… pretty crap.
The Boks will destroy them if the Lions play the breakdown like that.
After watching the Lions pack have a miserable time in the scrum against essentially a Sharks B side, I think that when the rubber hits the road, I just don’t think the Lions have the team speed and physicality needed to win a series from the Springboks. They will really need to elevate their game a level from what I have seen so far.

Yep, I think the Lions are going to shock the Boks. The Lions side against the Kings was a terrible team, which people playing out of position (Worsley has NEVER been a good 7, and Hines at 6? seriously?) Riki Flutey is never a 13. Also, I think Andy Powell is overrated trash. The first 15 for the Lions will be really good.
I actually think the lion’s backs will expose the boks. Roberts and BOD will cause huge problems for the Boks especially since they don’t have Jean De Villers. Yes, the Lions forward will struggle some against the Spring Boks forward, but does anyone remember the falls tours? The Welsh forwards made life REALLY hard for all three Southern teams. So did the Irish. These guys can play. Lions win the first test comfortably.
That’s what I mean by lack of depth… What is Flutey, Powell and Worsley even doing there?
There is no point talking about the Lions backs when the Lions forwards have been shite apart from the scrum (thanks to that lack of depth). Unless they can turn that around in huge style they are going to be losing breakdowns all day. If they keep turning over and giving away penalties like they have then BOD will be lucky to see it more than a few times.
I don’t see how you think the Lions will expose the Boks backs. They have done very little and bombed so many try scoring chances by knocking on, passes into touch, getting chased down on an EASY intercept!
I don’t see the likes of Bowe, Phillips and Roberts getting the room and soft defence they have had on these tour matches. Bowe is pure class and the best of the Lions backs on tour, but the challenge is for the Lions to get him the ball in space from what I think will be very static ball from a dominated Lions pack!
Roberts may not find the soft mid-fiileds he has been running through either. de Villiers is a very good defensive 12.
Thats my 2 cents worth (again)… I will watch drunk on a stag do with interest.
I still don’t know who to support! My wife is Irish so I should be supporting the Lions but there are Englishmen in it… The Boks are a Southern Hemisphere team but there are South Africans in it. What will I do?? 1st Test = Boks win by 12+.
Jatz – ‘a stag do’? Are you a sheep in wolf’s clothing i.e. K1 W1?
Haha, yeah well they are called stag dos over here. Why you say Bucks they look at you like some sort of freak. My wife’s Irish so we left Sydney and we’ve been living in Ulster for the last four years. Right up in BT20!
Either way, its a three day stag/bucks in Liverpool so I will call it either!
3 days in scouser-land?
Don’t take any valuables.
Yah, actually, I thought De Villers was hurt and wouldn’t be playing. With him being in the starting line-up, I retract what I said about the midfield defense. Life got much much harder for the Lions with him back in there.
Worsley is a good 6, not a a good 7, I think they were just giving him a run. Flutey is a good 12, not a good 13. I have no idea why Powell was taken on tour. Hopefully his upright running style and arrest-on-sight moustache won’t see a test pitch.
Still think they are with a chance though. The combinations are coming together and the forward won’t need to do much to give their back space to run. They certainly have to do better than they have been though.
Also a bit worried but I think the Bokke wont be as rusty as we think. They had now twee weeks training with the Emergency Bokke and the views I saw these two teams got stuck in each other. Also love the pick of Brussouw for the Bokke, that should settle the breakdowns and only place where they may overpower us is scrumming. Attended the WP match on Newlands on saturday and they couldnt even overpower a light five below CC WP team in the wet. Well I am a bit worried but that is usual before a Bokke test and cant wait for saturday. Would love to see the Bokke plays some high volume full blast stuff.
I believe that is the only mode Bakkies has…
lions have been terrible. terrible. after the blackwash last time in NZ, its going to be a greenwash in SA. even without match time, the boks have a settled look to them and have been playing as a team for years. the combos are settled and the lions just don’t have the talent. SA teams haven’t lost to a home nation team since 2006…
I disagree Owen, they have won 6 games on the trot and speculatively, the standout players for them will be selected for the test side. There hasn’t been clear 1st and 2nd XV selections and this has obviously impacted upon performance. However, I reckon if the Bokkie players had been included in some of the provincial sides i.e. Sharks etc, you would have seen a commensurate increase in the quality of that particular selection and more deliniation between dirties and firsts. I think the Lions have a real chance but realistically its going to be a pretty big ask.
The Lions team for the First test has just been announced – the team is:
15. Lee Byrne (Ospreys/Wales) 14. Tommy Bowe (Ospreys/Ireland) 13. Brian O’Driscoll (Leinster/Ireland) 12. Jamie Roberts (Cardiff Blues/Wales) 11. Ugo Monye (Harlequins/England) 10. Stephen Jones (Scarlets/Wales) 9. Mike Phillips (Ospreys/Wales)8 . Jamie Heaslip (Leinster/Ireland) 7. David Wallace (Munster/Ireland) 6. Tom Croft (Leicester Tigers/England) 5. Paul O’Connell (Munster/Ireland) Captain 4. Alun-Wyn Jones (Ospreys/Wales) 3. Phil Vickery (London Wasps/England) 2. Lee Mears (Bath/England) 1. Gethin Jenkins (Cardiff Blues/Wales)
Replacements: 16. Matthew Rees (Scarlets/Wales) 17. Adam Jones (Ospreys/Wales) 18. Donncha O’Callaghan (Munster/Ireland) 19. Martyn Williams (Cardiff Blues/Wales) 20. Harry Ellis (Leicester Tigers/England) 21. Ronan O’Gara (Munster/Ireland) 22. Rob Kearney (Leinster/Ireland)
Not too many surprises in this playing group which was essentially telegraphed by McGeechan’s selection of the dirties for the Southern King’s match.
Wallace, who is also normally a No. 7, has been selected ahead of Martyn Williams. There were thoughts that he would go into Saturday’s game with two No. 7s (maybe in view of the new play the ball interpretation). This hasn’t happened and Tom Croft who wasn’t originally selected in the tour party has been chosen as the blind side flanker. He’ll provide a lineout option and a bit more ball running capacity. The only other selection connundrum was really the 2nd lock, and Wyn Jones gets the guernsey. He’s also a middle of the lineout jumper like O’Connell so that should be interesting.
The bench pretty well picks itself although I’d prefer Hines as the lock replacement, and Shaw has stepped up recently as well. All up – predictable and it looks to be essentially selected on form.
Bokke selection from the other day was:
15. Francois Steyn 14. JP Pietersen 13. Adrian Jacobs,12. Jean de Villiers 11. Bryan Habana 10. Ruan Pienaar 9. Fourie du Preez 8. Pierre Spies 7. Juan Smith 6. Heinrich Brussow 5. Victor Matfield 4. Bakkies Botha 3. John Smit (capt) 2. Bismarck du Plessis 1. Tendai Mtawarira
Replacements: 16. Gurthro Steenkamp 17. Deon Carstens 18. Andries Bekker 19. Danie Rossouw 20. Ricky Januarie 21. Jaque Fourie 22. Morne Steyn
The only surprises were Cheetahs flanker Brussow, who was not in the original extended Bokke squad, and the selection of Francois Steyn at fullback. There was speculation that Pietersen was going to be the 15.
A very strong side that will put the squeeze on our Brit & Paddy friends. I’m expecting a cracker of a match. They’re expecting showers in Durban on Saturday – I’d imagine that any wet weather would maybe favour the Lions.
