Barker 46 — Waverley 0
A brief report by “Anonymous Al”
The teams
Waverley
For the second consecutive week Waverley was competitive in the first half. The boys were tenacious in defence before the break and their kicking game turned the Barker backs around, putting the Waverley team in some good attacking positions; but they couldn’t manage to convert any advantages into points.
It looks like it could be a long season for the Waves. There’s no doubt they need to play more structured game. However, looking on the bright side they had three U16s playing: Jaya Yoannidis on one wing, Jackson Mohi on the other wing and number 10 Tyzac Bailey.
They also have some well-performed younger teams and players coming through the ranks and enough Year 11 boys in the 1sts and 2nds to look forward to next season.
Barker
The visitors ended up being too strong for Waverley, as their dominance gained more momentum as the clock ticked closer to the full time whistle, giving them a convincing win.
The Barker defence was solid and well structured. After half time the Barker pack played strongly and rolled forward efficiently to set up opportunities for their backs, who converted them into points. They had Waverley on the back foot and scrambling in defence.
They looked strong when they ‘clicked’ but need to be more consistent throughout the entirety of a game. Their structure was good but their execution let them down at times.
The Players
Waverley
Their best were number 10 Tyzac Bailey (fearless in defence against his bigger opponents and showed promise with his kicking and attacking game); number 8 Zac Cardassilaris (willing to take the ball up); forwards Justin Cooper and Charlie Cam (busy and played tough) and fullback Dion Narayan (dangerous in attack when given the opportunity).
Barker
Their hooker never stopped all game and their entire forward pack worked well together as a whole in the second half. Their scrumhalf Steve Kirby gave quick service and kicked well, and their centres were impressive also.
