The Australian Old Boys Rugby Choir have managed to broker a deal with the ARU to let them sing the national anthem at the Sydney Bledisloe on September 11th.
The only catch, they need 10,000 fans on their Facebook page by Monday the 6th September for the deal to go ahead. They are already a quarter of the way there, so if you have a Facebook profile please head over here and click Like.
I spoke to former West Harbour winger and Choir Captain Mick Garnett, who commented “We’ve heard too many pop stars muck about with Advance Australia Fair over the years and the boys want to address it,”. By “it”, Mick could well have been referring to what happens when focus groups tell marketing gurus that they’d like to hear Bardot:
Mick describes the OBRC version as “bold and stirring, forthright and honest”, which sounds like just the tonic to inspire the Wallabies to break the kiwi’s winning streak. If the crowd get behind the choir and belt out our national anthem with pride and passion, this would inspire the Wallabies and let them know the crowd are genuinely behind them.
If you don’t believe me, turn your speakers up and feel the atmosphere generated by the Scottish and Welsh crowds.
