We brought you the story about a month ago of a new mystery player set to link up with the Queensland Reds. That story can be found here, but it seemed to run cold around the time of the floods. Well Green and Gold Rugby can EXCLUSIVELY reveal that Roberts is set to make his first appearance at Reds training THIS Thursday morning.
Whilst the floods seem to have played a part in the delayed start to the Super Season for Roberts, rumours abound that he also used the period to ‘test the waters’ if you excuse the somewhat distasteful pun.
“Ok, I’ll admit it. I’ve had some discussions with the Melbourne Rebels” explained Roberts.
“Most people would be aware that I am pretty close to the Weeksy and Delvey, and Gareth definitely did try to entice me to Melbourne. I don’t see a problem with having those discussions. I mean to represent Queensland is a lifelong dream, but opportunities come up elsewhere I’d be mad not to look at them.”
It would seem that Roberts is not just restricting himself to rugby either. When asked as to whether he had been approached by Craig Davison, the Brisbane business man behind a big to secure a second NRL team for Brisbane, Reg was coy.
“Right, who told you? Look, at this stage I can neither confirm nor deny I have been approached by Craig over lunch in Toowong last week.”
The AFL seem to be also in the hunt as they look to break into new markets across the country.
“You’re making this hard for me as I want my focus to be on the Reds and the Reds only. What I will say is that the AFL recognised there was an untapped market for Polynesians in AFL out there. So they signed a couple of Polynesian athletes in Israel Folau and Karmichael Hunt” Roberts said.
“Let’s just say the AFL have also realised there is an untapped market in overweight, aging men with absolutely no idea about their sport. So they came to me.”
“However I can reiterate that my commitment is 100% towards the Reds and I’ll be doing all I can to ensure their success in Super Rugby this season.”
Reg Roberts will be training with the Reds this Thursday morning at Ballymore and G&GR will have a full report following the session.
