With a squad of 40 it’s easier to talk about who didn’t make it than who did, but there are a few little glimmers that give you an idea of where this Wallaby team just might be going. By and large – I like ’em.
So, top things I like about it –
1. A harder edge
It’s what’s got the Brumbies to where they are this year in Super Rugby, and with 12 players in the squad it’s paid off in terms of the Wallabies squad as well. Notables here are Scott Fardy plus the fact that the Wallabies have named Peter Kimlin and said they’ll chase him, even though he’s due to head off overseas. Tevita Kuridrani in the backline could well be the answer to the powerhouse centre that’s been missing since Morty.
2 . Some proper tens
From pinning our hopes on a guy who’s aptitude was sketchy at best, we’ve suddenly got three solid options at five-eighth, all of whom play the position, albeit in different styles.
Not nailing all his hopes to Cooper will be vital for McKenzie, and in Toomua and Foley he has two alternatives who, despite their international lack of experience, have outplayed the Reds pivot this year. This gives the Wallabies both the ability to seriously change up game plans as well as build for the future.
3. Excitement machines
Forgetting Beale who’s out with injury and O’Connor who’s listed firmly as wing/fullback – there are some names here that can really lift the heart-rate. Clearly Israel Folau is one (and despite positive noises from NSW, the Pulveriser is yet to see a signed contract) but other talent to savour will be Chris Feauai-Sautia, Peter Betham and Jesse Mogg. In the forwards Hugh Pyle and Hugh McMeniman also have the ability to raise an eyebrow.
4. An end to the nonsense
Nic White got picked. Not so hard, was it?
5. Balance
The upshot of all of the above, is this squad feels better balanced than a few I can remember. You can see more bets that could just come off, together with guys you know can get the job done at international level. There is some concern around the front row, particularly at tight-head and over depth at hooker, but it’s hard to see too many other choices McKenzie could have realistically made.
And all of this with a squad where no-one is over 30.
What about you, how much do you like this squad?
