Yet another round of Premier Rugby has wrapped up and we’re starting to see the clear leaders of the competition.
Let’s go to Crosby Park where Brothers defeated the Gold Coast 41-5. This bonus point win keeps them at the top of the table on 20 points.
Here’s my match report for this game:
Brothers have continued their undefeated run in the Premier Rugby competition with a 41-5 win over the Gold Coast at Crosby Park’s Annual ANZAC Match.
The Breakers proved to be tough opponents, opening the game with a runaway try. Following a second close-try from the Gold Coast, the Brethren kicked into gear and responded with a corner try from James Carter.
Gold Coast coach Rob Nowlan praised his relatively young side for persisting with the game. “Brothers are a really good side. We made a few mistakes and they punished us for that. We’re gradually working up to Brothers’ level and once we get to that level, we’ll be able to really compete.”
“The Brothers side have been playing together for years and my side is very new and we’re still figuring out how to play together as a team.”
This persistence was particularly evident in the second half when the Breakers prevented several attempted runaway tries from Damon Murphy in his comeback game for the Brethren.
Brothers showcased their characteristic effective team work throughout the game which resulted in numerous otherwise seemingly difficult tries.
Their try line defence also proved to be particularly effective in the first half when the Gold Coast came close to scoring numerous times.
The Brethren’s Nathaniel Gendle had a particularly good game, scoring two tries and being vocal in setting up various others.
Brothers coach Matt Kaye said, “I’m happy with today’s result, we’ve just got to keep building on our successes and we’ll be ready for next week.”
The Brethren will head to Chipsy Wood oval to play Souths next week and the Breakers will have time to regroup with a bye.
Wests have suffered another loss, going down 38-8 to second-placed GPS. After narrowly losing to Souths last week, Wests will be looking to redeem themselves against Uni next week.
Uni didn’t manage to get a win for the ladies at their Annual Ladies Day, being defeated by Easts 41-24. The loss has put Uni into 4th place with Easts following closely behind.
Souths had a VERY convincing win against Norths, winning 71-7. They’re now in third place and their game against Brothers next week will definitely be the game to watch.
Sunnybank are getting their season back on track, defeating the Sunshine Coast 36-6.
So with Round 4 finished, Souths is definitely the team to watch. The fact that they’re becoming a threat early in the season shows that they’re in serious finals contention if they maintain their good run.
It’s still early days, though. And as we know, anything can happen in Premier Rugby.
