In a significant boost for the Hurricanes’ forward pack, formidable prop Xavier Numia has extended his contract with the team until the end of 2027. Since his debut in 2019 against the Waratahs, Numia has been a pivotal figure in the Hurricanes’ front row. The Wellington-born prop reached his 50th match milestone in 2024 before a torn calf muscle in the quarterfinals cut his campaign short.
The 26-year-old expressed his excitement about re-signing:
“It’s been my dream for as long as I can remember to play for the Hurricanes. Committing to a few more years is an epic feeling. The team is in a great place right now, the coaching staff and the energy within the group are unreal.”
Reflecting on the previous season, Numia added:
“I’ve got unfinished business after last season, especially the way I went out. But I’m feeling good after a solid run with Wellington in the NPC and bringing home the title.”
Numia played a pivotal role in the Wellington Lions’ title-winning 2024 campaign, standing out as one of the strongest ball carriers of the season.
Hurricanes Head Coach Clark Laidlaw expressed his enthusiasm about Numia’s commitment:
“This is massive news for us, and for the club, to have him re-commit. He’s a quality player, super consistent, with his best rugby still ahead of him.”
“We think he can go all the way and play at the highest level of this game. He epitomises what we want the Hurricanes to look like on and off the field. He’s got a cheeky personality; he’s always having fun but with a serious attitude to improve. We have seen that over the last few seasons, and he’s firmly placed himself among the top loosehead props in the country.”
Numia’s recommitment ensures that the Hurricanes’ front row will continue to benefit from his strength and experience in the coming seasons.
