Larkham backs Giteau for Wallabies start

Matt Giteau has played well enough to regain his spot in the Wallabies' starting XV and Australian great Stephen Larkham says the ACT Brumbies skipper can challenge Quade Cooper for his No.10 Test jersey.
While the ACT Brumbies have failed to deliver in their Super Rugby campaign, Giteau has been a stand-out performer.
He is the only Brumby in contention for the Australian Super Rugby player of the year award halfway through the season.

And after being dropped from Robbie Deans's starting Wallabies line-up last year, ACT attack coach and former Test flyhalf Larkham said selectors would be crazy not to give Giteau a major role at the World Cup in September and October.
Larkham was the Wallabies' chief playmaker at three World Cups, including the 1999 triumph.
Queensland's Cooper has been Deans's preferred flyhalf for the past two seasons with Giteau spending his time at Test level at inside centre.
But despite the Brumbies' poor record in 2011, Larkham declared Giteau the form Australian player in Super Rugby.
"[Giteau] has to be [the Wallabies'] 10 or 12 for the World Cup," Larkham said.
"I can't see anyone in Australian rugby who is playing as well as him at the moment.
"From the outside maybe it doesn't look like he's doing everything, but internally he's doing everything that's asked of him and more.
"It depends on how Robbie wants to use his 10 and 12 combination [at the World Cup], but the important thing is that Gitty's able to get out on the park and contribute.
"I guess he fits into the Wallabies anywhere he can control the play."
Giteau will likely remain in the Brumbies' No.12 jumper for their match against the Durban Sharks in South Africa on Sunday morning.
There will be minimal changes to the back line which lost to the Free State Cheetahs 47-36 last weekend with Robbie Coleman in contention to force his way onto the wing.
The Brumbies' poor form has done little to help the chances of their World Cup hopefuls.
How the ACT's disappointing year affects Deans's thinking will not be known for the next two months.
But the playmaker debate will be the most hotly contested. Incumbent Wallabies flyhalf Cooper has lifted the Queensland Reds to third on the ladder while the Brumbies are languishing in 10th.
Berrick Barnes has been impressive when not injured and James O'Connor has shown his potential for taking on more responsibility as a flyhalf or inside centre.
Giteau will leave Australian rugby after the World Cup to start a stint with Toulon in France.
Brumbies head coach Tony Rea jumped to his star playmaker's defence after the loss to the Cheetahs.
"It's a testament to [Giteau], it's easy to come back in the great times and have all the glory times," Rea said. "He didn't come back [to Canberra] for this, but the way he has been playing, he has been the same bloke, tougher, better, stronger and he will do it again next week.
"He needs a few more blokes with him if I'm being honest, he's carrying too much."
Larkham was adamant the Brumbies' Wallabies contingent still had enough time to prove their worth to Deans.
However, the Brumbies have been beaten by every Australian team so far this season and Deans has been keeping a close eye on Super Rugby action as he searches for winning combinations for Test success.
Adam Ashley-Cooper will be under pressure to keep his starting spot after his chequered start to the year.
