I'm just commenting on the fact that people are saying ships is just a finisher, implying he doesn't really create his own opportunities, and that the reds attacking prowess in the midfield is quite limited. Obviously that's not the case.

I'm not saying the Reds backs are all the out and out beat players in their position, however in a team game you need balance, players that compliment each other and players that work together. Just because there are individually better players that doesn't mean it's best for the team. AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) is a great example of an individually gifted player, who is probably one of our most talented options at 13, but would limit the pill to the wings and the fullback. JOC (James O'Connor) is one of our most individually talented options at 10, however can tend to play selfishly to the detriment of the backline outside of him.

Maybe I'm completely out of line to say that a good option would be to start with our best functioning backline, and then swap in players where we feel they add more without affecting the balance.

I dont think you are completely out of line, but I don't think it is how you should pick the Wallabies.

Especially when the Reds backline is hardly head and shoulders ahead of their provincial counterparts. Fainga'a and Harris have a LOT of assistance from having Genia and Cooper inside them.

Reds players and Brumbies players from earlier in the year benefited from ball going forward and a strong attacking system...

collectively they play better but individually other players may have stronger attributes that can't be displayed..

Which Reds players will be chosen in the next squad?

Slipper
Hanson-maybe (Charles would be better for the 3rd hooker)
Simmons
Gill
Higgers
Genia
Quade
Ioane
Ant Fainga'a
Morahan

Doubt we'll take a 3rd hooker, don't see the need for 3 opensides either.

Shipperley over Morahan and maybe Tapuai seeing as Deans took punts on Mitchell/Turner

I think it will be pretty wide, especially considering our first game is three weeks away still. I'd expect Slipper, Fainga'a, Simmons, Gill, Higgers, Genia, QC (Quade Cooper), Harris, Fainga'a, Shipperley, Morahan and Ioane.

Maybe AWH and Hanson as well.

Morahan is a bit of the forgotten man. He really has found form in the second half of the season and has all the attributes to make a real impact at test level if he continues to improve.

Size, skill and speed.

You've got to take a 3rd hooker! In specialist positions you always need 1 more than you need in the 22.

2 opensiders and 3 hookers is standard.

I would add Holmes to the above list - for purpose of the squad at least. I expect Robinson to continue to be first picked LH, but with the attrition rate in professional rugby and the lack of success in playing THPs on the loose head side adding an extra genuine LHP to the squad would seem to me to be sensible.

Although I don't expect him to actually be picked in the Wallabies unless Robinson & most likely Alexander were injured. (Even then, Deans would probably pick Kepu or Slipper).

Turner is pretty average at the best of times. Ships definitely better than him. Mitchell at least has been awesome in the past. Henry Speight shits on all of them of course :)
