REINFORCEMENTS cannot come quick enough for Southern Districts, reeling from the loss of four top players to overseas clubs.
Souths were pipped 22-21 by Northern Suburbs last Saturday at Forshaw Rugby Park.
For the second consecutive weekend, they lost in all grades, but remain fourth in the Shute Shield. The defeats coincide with overseas rugby clubs poaching their young stars.
French and Japanese clubs have signed outstanding winger Nicky Price and half Dewet Roos; breakaway Sean Doyle has gone to Ulster and now fullback and captain Brackin Karauria-Henry (Japan) has played his last game of the season for Souths, too.
To make matters worse, the club's top half, Grayson Hart, who won his Super Rugby debut with the NSW Waratahs two weeks ago, has a broken hand.
Souths will be boosted by the return of Tetera Faulkner, Kane Douglas and skipper John Ulugia from Super Rugby duty in time to play Manly (away) this weekend.
Other team changes include Ben Volavola to start at fullback and forwards Sami Latunipulu and Tim Metcher also named.
The side will be without Sitaleki Timani who alongside Douglas was named in an extended Wallabies squad to play Test matches against New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina later this year.
Souths' manager Darren Bray is one of many club officials critical of the lack of rules preventing overseas clubs from poaching players from club rugby — especially at a critical time leading up to the finals.
"It is something that the ARU has to look at for the future," he said. "All these players are our top under 23s who have either come through our colts system or thrived since joining us a few years ago.
"We don't begrudge them getting some money o.s., but us the clubs don't get a cent, and that is wrong; transfer fees should apply."
Tongan outside back Wil Helu played for Souths' second grade on Saturday and could be in the running for a start in first grade soon.
After Manly, Souths will tackle Eastwood (home), Easts (away), then have a bye before travelling to Sydney University for the last game before the Shield finals.
