Brief digression to the University rankings - I always found it interesting that ANU managed to do so well with their research to be well ranked internationally. I do think it's good for the nation's capital to have an internationally renowned university, and am impressed they managed to become the best in Aus with a much lower potential local student base.
Here's a highlight of the top Aus Unis (disclosure: I'm a little biased, I have an honours degree from one of them (not ANU), worked as a research assistant in another (not ANU), sort of work in a research field, and the company I work for does do collaborations with universities):

In saying all that (and this is not to besmirch the ANU - they are recognised as the top research uni in Aus for a reason), I find the way that the rankings are done is often not really reflective of quality of the academic research of the unis. Not saying the rankings are wrong, but rather that the methodology isn't great. However, blowed if I know
