Interesting Alberts will stay, thought he'd go to push for a spot over Spies. Same with Francois Louw

Or are those two carrying injuries?

The one benefit for us is that the 3 Nations starts 23rd July. We got an extra week to prepare now and specially the Brutes Bokke will be fresh and eager to go. We start away from home and we need start with a bang and build momemtum towards the WC. Knocking over the Wallabies and/or All Blacks away from home will be a big bonus for the Bokke in an important year.

Willem and Flo played all year. I think Flo may go on tour but Willem need a bit of recondition rest. With Juan Smith and Brussouw back , they can add Ashley Johnson to make it an all Tin Ear combo.

Boks to employ Nienaber

Cape Town - The Stormers may not have won through to the Super Rugby final but there has been more confirmation in the wake of their semi-final defeat last weekend that the Springboks will base their game heavily around the Cape team's strategy at the forthcoming World Cup.
Springbok coach Peter de Villiers lauded the Stormers as the team with the playing style that could win the World Cup when he spoke at a press conference in Wellington in April. The following week it was confirmed that Stormers tactical guru Rassie Erasmus had joined the Boks as a technical adviser. And now Jacques Nienaber is set to join his Stormers boss as part of the World Cup challenge.

It has not been officially announced yet, but the Nienaber recruitment is considered a done deal, and it will be made official at a press conference within the next couple of days. It is understood that the Nienaber appointment will be along the same lines of that of Erasmus - the defence expert will be part of the Bok group up to and including the World Cup and then revert to his current role at Western Province/Stormers for the 2012 Super Rugby and Currie Cup campaigns.

The Nienaber appointment should be welcomed for while the Stormers didn't advance to the Super Rugby final, they did end the competition as comfortably the best defensive side. And the World Cup is likely to be more about defence than Super Rugby is.

De Villiers wanted Nienaber to help the Boks out during last year's disastrous Tri-Nations campaign, but WP refused to release him. In any event, introducing a defensive system is not something that can be done in a couple of days, which was what De Villiers envisaged back then.

Now it is different, as it is anticipated the top Springboks will remain behind when the squad goes on the away leg of the Tri-Nations - as was the case when Jake White prepared the Boks for their World Cup challenge in 2007. It is understood that Erasmus will be staying behind to coach the players during a camp that will have a strong conditioning emphasis but also deal extensively with onfield strategy.

During that fortnight to three weeks that the playing Boks will be away in Australasia a lot of groundwork can be laid for the Boks to take on board the Stormers defensive system - though conditioning does have to be a big part of this as the secret to the Stormers’ proud defensive record is work-rate.

The Stormers conceded just 257 points and 18 tries in 17 matches in Super Rugby in 2011, while the Springboks leaked tries to an alarming extent during last year’s Tri-Nations. The Bok squad is currently in Cape Town undergoing medical evaluation. The squad for the away leg of the Tri-Nations is to be announced on Saturday.

That's all fair and well and fantastic news as long as none of the Stormers coaches start coaching attack.

The Bok attack was bad enough last year.

What do you Yarpies think of sending an understrength team for the opening tour in the trinations?

Andrew Slack (58)
Can't say until we see who stays but on the whole it's not a bad idea as there are a lot of fringe players who need to be tested and there are a lot of guys who have been carrying injury.

There are a bunch of combination that need time together.

yaaaar.

Understrength? Its the modern trade of rugby, WC the biggest price. No one remember who won the 3 Nations in 1995, 1999, 2003 & 2007 but every one know who won the WC in those years. Everybody write off Snor but I'll give him credit surrounding him by people like Prof Tim Noakes and Derick Coetzee who have adviced Jake White back in 2007 to get the Bokke in peak condition when it really matters altho most feel we had a lucky draw. Coetzee and Rassie will work with the injured and over played lot at home and recondition them in peak condition when it really matters. Add what Blou qouted , we need to give the other a change to prove themself in the closest enviroment they can wish for comes WC time. If they can knock over anyone of the Wallabies or and All Blacks away from home it will be an added bonus. We also have a extra week now to prepare them for that. No weak NH teams this year, so straight into battle comes 3 Nations in 3 weeks time. Maybe a blessing in the sky this.

Dick Muir will take charge of this. I wanted Nienaber a year ago with the Bokke and he sure proved his worth with the Stormers on S14 level, two years in a row. You'll see the differense. If we can add some steel on defense with our normal high kick and charge game we'll be OK. Scrumming the phase that have me worried the most at the moment. Nienaber worked now a long time with Jean, JdJ, Mossie, Habana and Aplon , so we'll see an immediate differense on defense.

According to Keo and Superrugby.co.za the following players are injured and will not play in the first two games of the 3N:
http://www.keo.co.za/2011/07/06/injury-sweeps-through-bok-camp/

Injured players unavailable for selection for the away leg of the Tri-Nations are: Duane Vermeulen (knee), Fourie du Preez (knee), Schalk Burger (thumb), Victor Matfield (calf and neck), Frans Steyn (ankle and back), Jaque Fourie (groin), Jean de Villiers (groin), BJ Botha (knee), Juan Smith (Achilles), Willem Alberts (shoulder), Bismarck du Plessis (shoulder), Andries Bekker (shoulder, groin and ankle), Jannie du Plessis (knee), Francois Louw (clavicle), Gurthrö Steenkamp (forearm), Francois Hougaard (ankle), Butch James (knee), JP Pietersen (back), Tendai Mtawarira (hamstring), Bryan Habana (shoulder), Bakkies Botha (knee).

So we could look at something like the team below.

Ouch..

15. Lambie / Aplon
14. Aplon / Basson
13. Juan de Jong
12. Olivier
11. Basson / Mvovo
10. M Steyn / Lambie
9. Ruan Pienaar
8. Kankowski
7. Deysel
6. Brussow
5. Hargreaves
4. Danie Rossouw
3. CJ vd Linde
2. John Smit
1. Greyling / Oosthuizen

16. Adriaan Strauss
17. Werner Kruger
18. Flip vd M
19. Ashley Johnson
20. McCleod
21. Elton Jantjes
22. Zane Kirchner

These tossbags need to call in Sadie for crying in a bucket.

Possible team:
15. Lambie / Kirshner
14. Aplon / Basson
13. Juan de Jong
12. Olivier / AD Jacobs
11. Basson / Mvovo
10. M Steyn / Lambie / Jantjies
9. Ruan Pienaar / McCloed
8. Spies / Kankowski
7. Johnson / Deysel
6. Brussow / Stegman
5. Hargreaves / Muller

(CJ vd Linde aint in the sqaud list as far as I know)

Ted Thorn (20)
The possible team is really not a bad team. Depending on who you speak to many of them should be there anyway. The area I think they'll most be lacking is leadership and belief. Smit can't carry everyone and I think they'll miss midfield leadership and a general in the loose forwards (eg. Smith).

If it wasn't for those factors I'd say this 'away' team has the potential to win overseas. If they find some belief they may well do.

Stirling Mortlock (74)
So they will be sending a B team.

Claiming these players are all injured

Injured players unavailable for selection for the away leg of Tri-Nations:
Duane Vermeulen (knee), Fourie du Preez (knee), Schalk Burger (thumb), Victor Matfield (calf and neck), Frans Steyn (ankle and back), Jaque Fourie (groin), Jean de Villiers (groin), BJ Botha (knee), Juan Smith (Achilles), Willem Alberts (shoulder), Bismarck du Plessis (shoulder), Andries Bekker (shoulder, groin and ankle), Jannie du Plessis (knee), Francois Louw (clavicle), Gurthrö Steenkamp (forearm), Francois Hougaard (ankle), Butch James (knee), JP Pietersen (back), Tendai Mtawarira (hamstring), Bryan Habana (shoulder), Bakkies Botha (knee).

Most of them played in the recent Sharks and Stormers losses and did not go off injured. My guess is if the WC final was tomorrow they'd be playing. Using injuries as the cover for resting it seems.

Yes this seems to be a bit of a stink. Why PdV doesn't just say they are being rested is beyond me. Another PR disaster.

So looking at the list, these are genuinely injured players who would not tour regardless and are genuinely injured:

Duane Vermeulen (knee), Schalk Burger (thumb), Frans Steyn (ankle and back arrived injured from France and has been in rehab), BJ Botha (knee - got injured at Ulster and came into rehab which is why he did not join a Super team), Juan Smith (Achilles), Willem Alberts (shoulder), Jannie du Plessis (knee), Gurthrö Steenkamp (forearm), Francois Hougaard (ankle - missed last 2 Bulls games), Bryan Habana (shoulder- went off in semi final),

This is the possible bullshit list:

Victor Matfield (calf and neck), Bakkies Botha (knee), Fourie du Preez (knee), Jaque Fourie (groin), Jean de Villiers (groin), Bismarck du Plessis (shoulder), Andries Bekker (shoulder, groin and ankle), Butch James (knee), JP Pietersen (back), Tendai Mtawarira (hamstring), Francois Louw (clavicle)

Why he doesn't just say he is resting these in the second list just seems stupid.

That would be ten people rested as opposed to 21 "injured".
